/ 03 What changes in Kolkata
Late nights, wet months, firm rules.
Four local conditions decide how a glow sign is built here and where it hangs.
The biggest nights are the darkest. Durga Puja and Kali Puja fill the streets after dark. A shop with a dead board on those nights is skipped.
Water is the main enemy. Water inside a light box rusts the frame and kills LED modules. It can also trip the shop's power. We use sealed boxes, outdoor-rated drivers, drain holes and an earth-leakage breaker.
Spring storms test the fixings. A big light box catches wind like a sail. We anchor the frame into the wall itself, not the shutter box, and check bolts and brackets each February.
Permission is part of the job. Size, projection over the footpath and wording all count. We confirm the position with your landlord and the corporation before anything is cut.

How your business model changes the plan
A single shop needs one good board. A brand with dealers needs one master design, sized for each counter. A franchise needs boards that look the same on every street after dark.
- Visit your frontage after dark. A board is judged against the street at night, not on a screen. Notes on glare, wires and neighbours.
- Set letter height by reading distance. Too small is lost, too bright bleeds. A size and colour choice.
- Show a night mock-up. You approve what you will really see. Your artwork on a night photo.
- Seal and earth every board. Water and loose wiring cause most failures. Named modules, drivers and breaker.
- Test every letter after dark. Good results should repeat, not happen by luck. A lit photo on day one.

KMC and the tax ruling
KMC has an Advertisement Department, and for Puja 2026 it asked each approved roadside board to show its permission ID. On 19 June 2025 the Calcutta High Court held that KMC cannot levy advertisement tax under Section 204 without framed Regulations or a budget estimate. We settle the permission and who pays any tax in writing.

Medium and heavy goods vehicles carrying non-essential items face daytime limits in Kolkata, outside the port area, and the Calcutta High Court declined to interfere. So large frames arrive and go up at night.

Google's help page says the Gemini web app works in more than 70 languages, with Bengali, Hindi and Urdu listed. That helps with first draft lines for a board. A native reader still checks every line, because fine strokes blur when lit.

What a glow sign in Kolkata costs.
We do not publish a price list, because a small flex box and a two-faced acrylic board are very different jobs. Making and fitting are quoted per board and billed at actuals. We send the quote within 2 working days.

Check before you build. KMC has an Advertisement Department, and for Puja 2026 it asked each approved roadside board to show a permission ID. Advertisement tax is under Section 204 of the KMC Act. We clear the glow sign's size and position with your landlord and the corporation first.

A properly sealed one will. Alipore's normals show close to 390 mm of rain in July alone, and water finds any open joint. Sealed boxes, outdoor-rated drivers and drain holes keep the glow sign lit, and we check the board once the rains end.

Have it lit and tested by mid-September. In 2026 Saptami falls on 18 October, but festive shopping starts weeks earlier and fabrication queues grow through August. For Kali Puja on 8 November, plan for early October, and keep a week spare for a final light test.
