/ 01 Digital marketing for small business

Word of mouthnow happens on a phone.

A local customer decides in a few minutes, on a phone, and you never get to make your pitch. PromotEdge sets up and runs the few things that make people nearby contact owners of small and local businesses.

That means your Google listing and reviews, WhatsApp, a simple website, and social media with small ads.

How to measure it. What can't be measured can't be achieved. Each month, count calls, bookings (including WhatsApp ones) and cost per enquiry. That is ad spend divided by the enquiries it brought.

Money comes in unevenly, so we spend more only in months that pay. Gyms peak in the new-year rush, AC repair in summer and salons at festivals. Planners, photographers and event companies peak in wedding season.

Astrologers, restaurants, clinics and jewellers have their own pages too. Our digital marketing covers the steps below. If you are not sure what to say about your shop, start with brand strategy. We work across India, mostly online, and meet you in your city at least once every three months.

/ 02 What usually gets in the way

What gets in the wayand the way through.

“A rival two lanes away shows up on Google Maps. We don't.”

Fix the listing first, because it is usually the cause: wrong category, few photos, wrong hours or old reviews. All of these can be fixed.

This is mine

“The phone rings, but I can't tell which calls came from ads.”

Give each source its own way in. Ads get their own WhatsApp link, and bookings go on one sheet, so you see what paid back.

This is mine

“We got one angry review, and it's the first thing people see.”

Reply calmly in public and fix what went wrong. Keep asking: fresh honest reviews push an old bad one down.

This is mine

“Our best person left, and their regular customers went with them.”

Keep one customer list on the shop's own number, with consent, in a simple CRM (one place for every customer). Regulars then follow the shop, not one person.

Spend in this order.Stop where it stops paying.

StepWhat we doWhy
1. Google listing and local searchFix your Google Business Profile and match your Justdial listing. Then SEO for small business, which is local SEO (ranking higher without paying per visit). Most local searches end on Google Maps.
2. ReviewsAsk every customer for a review, and reply to each one.Recent stars decide who gets the call.
3. WhatsAppWhatsApp Business with a catalogue, quick replies and an away message.A fast reply often wins the booking.
4. A simple websiteA few fast pages with large Call and WhatsApp buttons. Then social media marketing for small business: Instagram and Facebook posts.Google and careful customers want facts to check.
5. Small, local adsGoogle and Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads, shown only in your area, in busy months. They stop when you stop paying, so add them last.

Skip paid followers, bought phone lists and apps nobody will download. Then a clear name, look and signboard, delivered through PEXORA, a joint venture of PromotEdge and Prodigy.

/ 05 Cost

What affects the cost of small business marketing.

No price list. These things move the number.

We don't publish a price list. After a 30-minute strategist call, a written quote follows within 2 working days. Ad spend is paid to Google or Meta at actuals, and you approve it first.

What affects the cost

  • Locations. One shop, or branches with their own listings.
  • Where you start. A working listing and website, or nothing.
  • Content. A few posts a month, or regular shoots.
  • Ads. All year, or only peak months.

How we quote

  1. We talk about your business, area and busy months
  2. We check your listing, reviews, WhatsApp and website, then send a written scope
  3. Nothing starts until you decide

What you get in the quote

  • Steps in order, and any to skip
  • Who does what each month
  • Content and a monthly ad budget, paid at actuals
  • How we count calls and bookings

How it is billed

Way of workingWhen it fits
Set-up projectListing, reviews, WhatsApp and a simple website, done once. We confirm the timeline in the quote
Monthly planListing care, posts, reviews and a report. Minimum 3 months, 30 days' notice to stop

A good first plan is often a small one. If your money works harder in your shop or staff, we'll say so.

Every client and project is different. The cost depends on the effort it takes, so we price after the first call.

AI for small business:where it helps today.

Real business problems, from sales to back office, each with a plain AI fix. A person stays in charge of every step.

sales

Many small businesses say messaging apps like WhatsApp are very important for reaching customers, so each enquiry needs a quick answer and a record.

The AI fix A WhatsApp assistant answers common questions on timings, prices and location, takes bookings and writes each enquiry into a shared sheet. Staff handle custom requests and complaints.

Keeping members is a major challenge for gyms. Many stop for home workouts or a short break, and many of them are willing to rejoin.

The AI fix AI sends a WhatsApp check-in after missed visits and a comeback note at expiry, using offers the manager approved. The manager calls members who have been away longest.

The small business market in depth

Market size and trend

In 2025, India had about 7.92 crore firms outside farming, up 7.97% on 2023-24, so most are tiny. On 4 October 2026 the Udyam portal listed 9,77,52,598 registrations, over 99% micro. The two counts differ, so do not add them.

Source: Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, via PIB, release on firms outside farming, 6 May 2026 (https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2258362). Udyam Registration portal, MSME (Udyam) factsheet dashboard, 4 Oct 2026 (https://udyamregistration.gov.in/)

How buyers decide

Our view: people ask a friend, check Google Maps and reviews, then message on WhatsApp. They drop out when hours are wrong, reviews are old or nobody replies. A 2025 Kantar study, quoted by Meta, says 91% of online Indian adults chat with a business weekly.

Source: Meta, news post on Business AI on WhatsApp, 14 May 2026, citing Kantar (2025) (https://about.fb.com/news/2026/05/introducing-business-ai-on-whatsapp-for-small-businesses-in-india/)

What buyers expect

Our view, not a survey. People say: is it open, what does it cost, can I message? They rarely say, but judge you on: recent reviews with replies, photos of your real work, and one name and phone number everywhere.

How businesses here sell

Services. You sell time and skill, so reviews decide the call.

Franchise or membership. Each outlet needs one look and its own Google listing. See our franchise page.

Marketplace. Apps that book home services keep the customer, so build your own regulars.

More models: business models in India.

Where it is heading, and AI today and next

More customers will find you by phone: 39.37% of these firms used the internet for business in 2025, up from 26.68%. Today, Meta's Business AI in WhatsApp answers common questions and books appointments. Next, Meta says UPI payments in chat are coming. AI cannot fix slow service. See our AI systems.

In 2020 it took its new name. By 2025 it ran 247 training classrooms in 17 cities. In 2024 its Meta films for weekly bathroom cleaning were shown by area and time of day.

What you can do, and how we would deliver

What you can do, and what is not ours

Do the free things yourself: your Google listing, review requests and WhatsApp Business. A relative or part-time helper can answer messages. We cannot fix slow or poor service, because marketing only sends people to your door.

How we would deliver, and why each step

First we listen: your area, busy months and who calls. Then we check your listing, reviews and WhatsApp. We fix those before any ad, because ads sent to a weak listing waste money. Each month we count calls on one sheet, so we both see what paid back. Rima Shaw, our Senior Account Manager, is your day-to-day contact and sends the weekly reports. Jhalak Agarwal, our Performance Marketing Lead, runs the Meta campaigns and the D2C (direct-to-consumer) ads.

Astrology and spiritual

We give astrologers and spiritual guides our full service. We take no side on astrology or any ritual. We will not write a line that says a prediction will come true. A first message is often a private worry, so trust comes before the booking. Name the city your panchang (the Hindu almanac) times are for. A muhurat (an auspicious time) can shift 15 to 30 minutes between Mumbai and Delhi. The 1954 Drugs and Magic Remedies Act bars an ad that says a mantra or charm treats a listed disease.

Source: Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954, sections 2(c) and 5, India Code, as on 15 April 2026. Ved Panchang, Vivah Muhurat page, read 8 October 2026

Wedding planners

A family's first question is about a date, so answer the same day on WhatsApp. Reply from one date sheet: free, held or taken. Dates are usually fewest from July to October, as a panchang (the Hindu almanac) grants none in periods such as Chaturmas. A bride's mother may write first and an uncle who pays may read your Instagram. So make one page a family can forward in its group chat. Take a consent card from the couple before you post a wedding. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 asks for a parent's yes for any child.

Photographers

Nobody can try your work before they pay, so your portfolio does the selling. Give each kind of shoot its own fast page, with one full set from a real job. Families want to feel safe with you. A brand manager wants to know what the pictures may be used for. Write the use and the ownership into your contract. Section 17(b) of the Copyright Act, 1957 covers a photograph taken for payment. It first belongs to the person who asked for it, unless an agreement says otherwise. Our website design and local SEO help the work get found.

Home services

A customer with a leaking tap rings two or three names on Google Maps. The customer books whoever picks up and sounds sure. So fix the calls you already get before you buy ads. Keep a list of missed calls and ring back within minutes. Google's profile report counts taps on the call button, not calls you answered. If you travel to customers, Google lets you list up to 20 service areas by city or pin code, but no radius. Choose the ones where your job sheet shows you win. See our analytics and tracking and WhatsApp marketing.

Gyms and fitness studios

A gym sells a habit, so the money is in the months after joining day. Count the trials that turn up and the members who still train 30 days later, not likes. Put your desk hours on your Google profile. Put the class timetable on one fast page, because Google treats them as different things. Follow up each trial pass three times, then stop. Do not call a pass a free trial if it needs a purchase that cannot be refunded. The Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2022 guidelines bar that.

Event companies

An event company sells one day that cannot be redone, so your last event is your pitch. A family decides on Instagram photos and WhatsApp. A company decides through a marketing head who wants case pages and references. Ask for the date and a budget range on your first form. Then you can tell a real brief from a price check. Naming a client in your ad to gain an advantage needs its permission, say the Central Consumer Protection Authority's 2022 guidelines. Our local SEO builds a page for each city you have worked in.

Brand basics checklist

The basics

For local businesses

  • Google service area set upVisit customers at home? Google says hide your address and list the areas you serve.
  • Service list in your WhatsApp cataloguePeople ask what you offer first. Answer before they ask.
  • Review QR code at the counterGoogle allows a link or QR code to ask for reviews. Never pay for one.
  • Justdial or Sulekha listingSame name, phone number and address as on Google.
  • Udyam registrationFree and online at udyamregistration.gov.in. An official identity for small firms.
  • Shop and Establishment registration, if your trade needs itAsk your state labour office, and display it if asked.
  • One enquiry and booking sheetEvery call and booking, with its source.

Listings, reviews, creators and WhatsApp.

Breaking these can limit your listing or WhatsApp number.

Your Google listing. Use your real business name, keep one profile, and hide your address if you visit customers.

Reviews. Google's Maps policy bans paid reviews and any discount or free service for a review. India's BIS standard IS 19000:2022 on online reviews was voluntary at its 2022 launch.

Creators and WhatsApp. ASCI's August 2023 influencer rules want an upfront label like "Ad", even for a free haircut. WhatsApp allows messages only to people who agreed.

General guidance, not legal advice.

Straight answers.

  • People check you online before they call: Google Maps, reviews, photos. A business that looks active and trusted gets the call. An empty-looking one gets skipped, even if its work is better. Digital marketing is how a small business shows up, looks trusted and gets contacted by people nearby.

  • To be found, trusted and contacted by people nearby. Do your Google Business Profile, reviews and WhatsApp yourself, since they are free and quick to set up. Bring in an agency for ads, a website, content or tracking. Do so when you want them done well and have no time to run them.

  • Start with the free things: your Google listing, then reviews, then WhatsApp Business. Count calls on one sheet each week. Then add a simple website, and small local ads last. Keep each step for a few weeks before you add the next. Then you can see what each one brings.

  • The 70-20-10 rule is a rule of thumb. About 70% of budget goes on what works, 20% on what is growing and 10% on new tests. For a small business, the first money goes to the Google listing, reviews and WhatsApp. Treat the split as a guide, not a law.

  • We won't claim to be the best. Ask every agency, including us: Will you fix my Google listing and reviews before ads? How will you count my calls? Who works on my account? Is ad budget kept separate and shown to me?

  • It depends on your locations, where you start, your content and whether ads run all year or only in season. We don't publish a price list. A written quote follows within 2 working days. Ad spend is paid separately, and the quote shows each cost on its own line.

  • A fixed Google listing and reviews can bring calls in weeks. Local ads bring calls in days, but stop when you stop paying. Ranking higher in local search usually takes 3 to 6 months. Nobody can honestly promise a first-page ranking. We confirm the timeline in the quote.

  • Not on day one, but it helps. It gives Google and AI tools like ChatGPT clear facts about your services and area. It also gives customers a place to check you. A few fast pages with Call and WhatsApp buttons are enough.
