Sportsmarketing

For leagues, teams, academies and the brands that back them. Fans first, then sponsors, then revenue.

/ 01 Sports marketing agency

A team peoplecall their own.

Outside cricket, sponsors follow the fans, so a team has to give people a reason to care before it asks anyone for money. PromotEdge markets leagues, teams, academies and the companies that sponsor them.

The goal is simple: fans turn up, sponsors renew and academies fill their batches. To get there we build the identity, run the campaigns and social media, and plan the events and sponsor deals around the season.

Sports marketing in India starts with one hard fact: cricket takes most of the money, and every other sport, from kabaddi to badminton, competes for the rest. So a new league or club has to give people a reason to care: a local identity, a rivalry, stars they can meet.

We did this for the Kolkata Thunderbolts, a new volleyball club that set out to represent Bengal. The tagline was "Khelbe Bangla Jitbe Bangla" (Bengal will play, Bengal will win). The campaign, "Banglar Ball Bodle Geche", told Bengal that its ball had changed.

We also made the logo and jerseys, a mascot called Volley Biswas, and social media built around the players. That is our work, from brand strategy to social media marketing.

/ 02 What usually gets in the way

What gets in the wayand the way through.

“Sponsors signed for one season and didn't come back.”

Agree the sponsor's goals up front, so they can show their boss a return. We run brand activations on the ground and online, then report.

“Our academy gets enquiries, but few parents enrol.”

Show each coach's real record and batch timings, and offer a free trial through lead generation. A CRM (one place for every enquiry) gives each parent an owner and a reminder.

“A betting app offered us a big sponsorship. Should we take it?”

Look to esports and gaming brands with no money at stake: they are allowed. The Online Gaming Act, 2025 bans ads for online money games.

/ 05 Cost

What affects the cost of sports marketing.

We don't publish a price list. We quote after a 30-minute call with one of our strategists, against a written scope. Media, production and event costs are billed at actuals, after you approve them.

What affects the cost

  • A new club or league, or an existing one
  • The length of the season and number of matchdays
  • Content each week: posts, reels, videos and player stories
  • Events, home-city media and sponsor support

How we quote

  1. We talk about your club, league or academy, and your fans and sponsors
  2. We write a scope that follows the season
  3. A written quote follows within 2 working days of the first call

What you get in the quote

  • The season calendar and matchdays we cover
  • Weekly content
  • Events and home-city media, at actuals
  • Sponsor support and a report on fans and sponsor value

How it is billed

Way of workingWhen it fits
Launch projectIdentity, a launch campaign and the first weeks of content. Timeline confirmed in the quote
Season retainerContent, matchday support and sponsor reporting. Minimum 3 months, 30 days' notice to stop
Costs at actualsMedia, production, events and venue fees, as charged

Ask how any agency will measure fans and sponsor value. We can't do magic alone. The more involved you are, the faster you see results.

Every client and project is different. The cost depends on the effort it takes, so we price after the first call.

The sports market in depth

Market size and trend

In 2025, sports sponsorship in India was worth ₹7,943 crore, up 7%. Digital advertising around sport grew faster, up 24% to ₹4,449 crore. WPP Media says other industries took premium slots when online money-game brands left.

Source: WPP Media, Sporting Nation: India sports sponsorship report 2025, 30 March 2026

How buyers decide

A fan sees a clip or hears from a friend, checks fixtures, then buys a ticket on the phone. A sponsor asks what it gets back. A parent asks other parents and searches near home. All three drop out when nobody replies fast.

What buyers expect

In their words: fans want "when, where, easy entry." Sponsors want "show me what my money did." Parents want "a coach I trust, fixed timings." Few say it, but parents judge how safe the place is, and all judge a slow WhatsApp reply.

How teams and leagues earn

Franchise league (Pro Kabaddi League, Indian Super League): a business owns each city team, which must win its own city. Club: sponsors and ticket buyers pay, so the sponsor's return is your marketing. Academy: parents pay monthly, like gyms and fitness studios. See our business models guide.

Where it is heading, and AI today and next

Ahmedabad was awarded the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and the 2025 national sports policy backs leagues and private funding. Artificial intelligence (AI) today: answers questions, sends reminders, drafts sponsor reports. AI next: match clips cut and subtitled in many languages. AI cannot give a club a rivalry. See AI automation systems.

Leagues and teams

A team sells a product played in public, so build what you control: its identity, its players and its matchday. Sponsors buy the plan before there are fan numbers. Count tickets sold by source, not just followers, and message fans on WhatsApp only if they opted in. For the Kolkata Thunderbolts, a new volleyball club, we studied how Bengal sees leagues without cricket. We then made the logo and reveal video, the home, away and libero jerseys, and Volley Biswas, a human mascot ("Biswas" means trust in Bengali).

A brand journey worth knowing: Pro Kabaddi League

Pro Kabaddi League began as an idea of commentator Charu Sharma and kabaddi official Deoraj Chaturvedi, under a firm called Mashal Sports. Many said kabaddi was a village game, and Star, the broadcaster, reportedly doubted stadiums would fill.

Before the 2014 season, Star ran teasers showing kabaddi's moves without naming the sport, and made the rules faster for TV. The league's handbook claims 435 million viewers for season one. By 2025, it had 12 teams.

What you can do, and how we would deliver

What you can do, and what is not ours

You can do these yourself: keep one list of fans, parents and sponsors, publish fixtures, reply fast. A ticketing platform, a sports lawyer, the venue and the coach are not ours. We take the identity, content, sponsor deck and matchday work.

How we would deliver, and why each step

First, a 30-minute call, so the written scope follows your season. Second, identity and a sponsor story, so all else looks like one team. Third, content and home-city media before home games. Fourth, matchday events and sponsor work, then a report on fans and sponsor value. Sayantan Guha, our Chief Creative Director, writes the creative brief and the campaign ideas, and directs ad films and sports work. Rima Shaw, our Senior Account Manager, is your day-to-day contact and sends the weekly reports.

Brand basics checklist

The basics

For sports

  • Team kit and sponsor-logo guidelinesFollow your league's sizes. AIFF 2024 kit rules: front sponsor up to 200 sq cm.
  • League and federation asset rulesAsk for the brand kit. Use league and federation logos only as they allow.
  • Sponsor category checkAds for online money games are barred: Online Gaming Act, 2025, section 6.
  • Athlete contract and ad-labelling basicsImage rights in writing. Label paid posts: ASCI influencer guidelines 2021, CCPA 2022.
  • Ticketing and stadium brandingClear ticket design and entry flow. Get the venue's approval for boards and banners.
  • Academy enrolment form with parent consentAsk a parent's consent for a child's data (DPDP Act, 2023, section 9).
  • Safeguarding policy for young playersWritten rules, a named contact, a way to report. Model: the athletics federation's SAHAS policy.

Sponsors, athletes and young players.

A few rules shape which sponsors a club can carry.

Money-game sponsors. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 bars ads for online money games: up to two years in prison, a fine up to ₹50 lakh, or both.

Check every gaming sponsor with your lawyers and the Online Gaming Authority of India's list of online money games (Rules, 2026). Esports and social games are allowed.

Athlete and creator posts. Paid posts need a clear label, under ASCI (Advertising Standards Council of India) rules and the CCPA's (Central Consumer Protection Authority) 2022 endorsement guidelines.

Image rights. Agree who may use a player's image, and for which sponsor, in contracts before the season.

Young players' data. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023 treats under-18s as children. It needs a parent's verifiable consent and bars tracking or targeted ads at them.

The DPDP Rules, 2025 bring this in over 18 months from November 2025, so aim academy ads at parents.

General guidance, not legal advice.

WPP Media, a global advertising group: India's sports economy was ₹18,864 crore in 2025, up 13.4% from ₹16,633 crore in 2024, and cricket took 89% (₹16,704 crore). Sporting Nation report, March 2026.

Straight answers.

  • A sports marketing agency helps leagues, teams, athletes, academies and sponsors build fans and revenue. That means club identity and campaigns, social media, matchday events, ticket and merchandise sales, and a sponsor return they can show. The aim is a fan base that turns up, buys and stays.

  • Yes, by owning a city or a state and making stars of their players. Cricket took 89% of India's sports money in 2025, per WPP Media's Sporting Nation report. Sponsors then get fans they can't reach elsewhere, so a smaller sport with a loyal local base can still be worth backing.

  • We build a sponsorship story from real fan numbers and put it in a deck, with brands that fit your fans. After a sponsor signs, we run the deal on the ground and online, then report at season end, so the sponsor can see what their money brought and decide to renew.

  • No single platform wins. Instagram and YouTube suit match clips and player stories. WhatsApp keeps local fans updated on fixtures and tickets. X (formerly Twitter) suits live talk during matches. Choose one or two where your fans already are, and post there every match week.

  • Yes: cricket, football, badminton, swimming, tennis, athletics and multi-sport. Parents search near home, so local SEO keeps your Google Business Profile current with coach profiles, batch timings and reviews. Share student results only with a parent's consent. Never promise a selection or scholarship.

  • We built the club's identity, from the logo and jerseys to the mascot Volley Biswas, and ran the "Banglar Ball Bodle Geche" campaign and player-led social media. The aim was to make a new club part of Bengal's sporting culture.

  • Ask four things. Does it judge the work on fans, ticket sales and sponsor renewals? Has it built a club or league brand you can see? Does it plan around your season? Will it warn you off a risky sponsor? Ask us the same.

  • It depends on the length of the season, weekly content, and the events and media in the plan. We don't publish a price list. A written quote follows within 2 working days of a first call, with each cost on its own line, so you can compare it with other quotes.
