/ 01 Web app and SaaS design in India

Screens people can work inall day, without help.

Software that people use all day should be easy to work in without a training session. PromotEdge designs web apps, portals and SaaS products: sign-in, lists, forms, search, reports and error screens, tested with real users on desktop and phone before developers build them.

A web app is software you open in a browser to do a job, such as raising an invoice, tracking an order or approving leave. A SaaS (software as a service) product is one that many companies use on a subscription. Web app design is the work of shaping the screens that people use it through.

This page is about the design. If you also want the product built, the same team can do it: see web application development and web portal development. Unsure what is wrong today? Start with a UX audit.

Dashboards get their own care. Each one should answer one question, show few numbers and label them clearly. Nielsen Norman Group describes a dashboard as a single-page view, focused on one task: communicating critical information.

/ 02 What the design covers

From the first callto a design developers can build.

PartWhat we doWhat you receive
User flowsAgree who uses the product, and draw each daily task step by stepA flow for each kind of user
WireframesPlain layouts for sign-in, home, lists, forms, search and reports, with real dataWireframes to approve
Clickable prototypeA working mock-up tried by five or six real usersA test report and a fixed prototype
UI screensFinal screens for desktop and phone, with empty states and errorsScreen files
Design systemA shared kit of buttons, tables, forms and coloursA short library
Developer handoverWalk your developers through the files and check the built screensFiles and a walk-through call

Design cannot rescue a product nobody needs, so we ask early who needs yours and why. For the build, see web application development. For the wider design work, see UI/UX design.

Our beliefWe know digital inside out, and we think like an Indian business.

/ 03 Common hurdles

What usually gets in the way,and the way through.

“New staff need a training session before they can use it.”

We list what each kind of user does daily and put those tasks first.

“The lists are long, and nobody finds the record they want.”

Nielsen Norman Group advises a readable first column, such as a name, and filters that clearly show when they are on. We design tables and search that way.

“Forms are long, and people give up or make mistakes.”

We break long forms into short steps, mark what is required, and write error messages that say what to fix.

“An empty screen looks broken, and an error says only that something went wrong.”

We design the empty, loading and error screens too. Each says what is happening and what to do next.

“The software works at a desk, but staff in the field use phones.”

We design the phone version of each key screen. WCAG 2.2 sets 24 by 24 CSS pixels as the minimum button size at its AA level.

“Reports show a lot, and nobody knows what to look at.”

Each report gets one question to answer. Other numbers come off.

/ 04 How we work

Learn the daily tasks first, then draw, test and hand over.

The time depends on the number of screens and kinds of user. We confirm it in the quote.

  1. 01

Agree who uses it, and for what

A short call with the product owners, then talks with a few real users.

  2. 02

    Draw the flows and layouts

We draw each task as steps, then as plain layouts with real data.

  3. 03

    Test the prototype

Five or six users try the clickable version while we watch.

  4. 04

Design the screens and the kit

Final screens for desktop and phone, and the shared kit.

  5. 05

    Hand over to the developers

You get the files and a walk-through, and we check the built screens.

Tell us what’s not working. We’ll send you an honest one-page growth plan, free.

How we run it, and why

Our UI/UX designer, Sunanda Basak, leads the design. Our full stack developer, Avijit Bhattacherjee, checks what the design needs from the build.

How your business changes the design

A SaaS product (see SaaS and tech) needs sign-up and first-use screens a new customer can finish alone. A finance or insurance portal (see BFSI) needs clear forms and records. Screens often sit on other systems: see AI and business systems.

  1. Start from the daily tasks. People live in a few screens. A flow for each kind of user.
  2. Test before code. A fix on a drawing is cheaper than a fix in code. A test report.

Tables and dashboards: today and next

Tables

Nielsen Norman Group says a table should serve four tasks: find records, compare data, view or edit one row, and act on records. It advises a readable first column and, for deep edits, a side panel, since a popup covers the neighbouring rows.

Dashboards

Nielsen Norman Group says bar and line charts read quickly. Pie, 3D and gauge charts read poorly. Colour should not carry the numbers.

Our view: tools will draft screens faster. Knowing what a clerk needs at 6 pm takes a person who has watched the work. Ask us.

/ 05 Cost

What affects the cost of web app and SaaS design.

No price list. These things move the number.

Every client and project is different. The cost depends on the effort it takes, so we price after the first call. We publish no price list. The first step is a free growth plan: a 30-minute call and a one-page plan, for projects we think we can help.

What affects the cost

  • Number of screens and flows
  • Kinds of user, such as staff and dealers
  • Desktop only, or phone screens too
  • Whether you need a full design system
  • Testing with real users, and how many rounds

How we price it

  1. You tell us what the product does and who is stuck today
  2. We look at the product or the plan for it
  3. We write down the screens in scope and what you receive
  4. You get the quote in writing within 2 working days, each cost on its own line

What you get in the quote

  • The flows, wireframes and the tested prototype
  • Final screens and the developer handover
  • The design system, if you choose it
  • The build, if you choose it (3-month minimum on ongoing work, then 30 days' notice)

We take on a limited number of projects and say honestly if one is not a fit. Comparing quotes? Ask who owns the files.

/ 06 What happens next

What happensafter you ask.

For projects we think we can help, this is how it goes.

  1. 01

    A strategist calls you

In one working day: a 30-minute call with one of our strategists about your business and what is not working.

  2. 02

    You get a 1-page plan

A short, honest plan: what to fix first and what we would do. It is free.

  3. 03

A quote, if you want one

If you want to go ahead, we send a quote within 2 working days.

A typical website takes 4 to 6 weeks. Contracts start at 3 months, with 30 days' notice to stop. A single job, such as one event or one print run, is quoted as one project.

Common questions.

  • Web app design is the work of planning and drawing the screens of software that runs in a browser. It covers sign-in, lists, forms, search, reports and error screens. The aim is that people do their daily job quickly, without training.

  • A web app can be used by one company's staff. A SaaS product is sold to many companies, so it also needs sign-up, first-use and settings screens that a new customer can finish alone. The daily work screens are designed the same way for both.

  • We begin with the question the person must answer, and the decision that follows. Then we show only the numbers that help, with clear labels. Nielsen Norman Group says bar and line charts read quickly. We avoid pie, 3D and gauge charts.

  • Yes, for the screens your staff or customers use on phones. WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum button size of 24 by 24 CSS pixels at its AA level. We test the prototype on real phones, so tables and buttons work with a thumb.

  • Yes. Design and build can be separate or together. Your own developers can build from our files, with a walk-through from us. Or our team builds it: see our web application development and web portal development pages. We can quote both together.

  • We confirm the time in the quote, as it depends on the number of screens and kinds of user. We need access to the product or its plan, an hour with the product owners, and a few real users to talk to.

  • Every client and project is different. The cost depends on the effort it takes, so we price after the first call. We publish no price list. You get a written quote within 2 working days, each cost on its own line. The first step is a free growth plan.
