The pack is the last salesperson, and it gets about two seconds. A pack that gets picked, and passes the label rules the first time.

Your pack isthe last salesperson.

A pack has to win a crowded shelf or a wholesaler's counter in seconds, and then pass the legal check on its label. PromotEdge designs labels, cartons, pouches and gift boxes for food, tea, garment, leather and FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) brands across Bengal.

A kirana owner in Howrah orders from a Burrabazar wholesaler and puts your pack on a high shelf. A Salt Lake shopper gives it two seconds. On a delivery app it is a small square. One pack has to work in all three.

Our job is to impress your buyer at the shelf, not you. So we start with your buyer, shelf and numbers. Packaging sits beside our branding in Kolkata and graphic design, so the pack, the shop board and the post look like one brand.

Printing is delivered through PEXORA, a joint venture of PromotEdge and Prodigy. Your team signs off every claim on the mandatory panel. For India-wide work, see packaging design.

/ 03 Why Kolkata packs are different

Wholesale shelves, three scripts, two big seasons.

Four facts about how goods are made and sold from Kolkata change how we design a pack here.

Much of East India buys through Burrabazar. Its sub-markets, such as Khangrapatti, Sonapatti, Masalapatti and Lohapatti, restock retailers across West Bengal and nearby states, says the state's export plan. Such a pack must survive stacking and a dusty shelf, and show the brand from across the counter.

Kolkata exports, so packs travel. Gold articles and jewellery were about 58.8% of the district's exports in 2024-25, and leather clusters sit at Topsia and Janbazar. A jewellery box or a leather carton is often the first thing an overseas buyer touches.

Three scripts. Census 2011 gives Kolkata district 61.45% Bengali, 22.84% Hindi and 13.04% Urdu by mother tongue. A label for Bengal may need Bengali on the front. Bihar or Odisha need another plan. Poila Boishakh and Puja bring gift packs.

/ 05 How a pack comes together

Brief to printed packin about eight weeks.

  1. 01

Brief and shelf visit (week 1)

We meet you in Sector V or at your factory, then visit a wholesaler, a local shop and the delivery apps.

  2. 02

    Three design routes (weeks 2-3)

Think creative, act on numbers: three directions shown beside your competitors, with our view of which will sell.

  3. 03

Refine, panels and mock-ups (weeks 3-5)

The chosen route goes on every face and the printer's dieline. Your team approves the mandatory text.

  4. 04

Proof and press check (weeks 6-7)

A signed colour proof (a test print) before the run, and a check of the first sheets where possible.

  5. 05

Launch and the next variant (week 8 on)

Pack shots for your online store, and a file kit for the next flavour.

Tell us what’s not working. We’ll send you an honest one-page growth plan, free.

How we deliver it, and why

How your business model changes the plan

A dealer-led B2B (business-to-business) firm needs strong outer cartons with clear variant codes. A D2C (direct to consumer) brand needs packs that survive a courier. An exporter checks the buyer's label rules.

  1. Go to the shelf first. A pack is judged beside its rivals, not on a screen. Photos from wholesale, local and app shelves.
  2. Design three routes. One option is a guess; three show what is possible. Routes on a shelf mock-up.
  3. Fill the mandatory panel early. Late legal text forces a redesign. A panel your team signs off.
  4. Prove the colour on press. Screens lie; paper decides. A colour proof and first-sheet check.
  5. Build a file kit. Good results should repeat, not happen by luck. Layered files for the next variant.

Sourav Majumder, our Creative Designer, prepares the print-ready artwork files.

Go deeper: tea, jute and label rules

Tea

J Thomas & Co, with a Kolkata branch, calls itself one of the largest and oldest tea auctioneers in the world. It says it handles about 200 million kg a year. IBEF puts West Bengal's tea at 347.59 million kg in April to December FY25, about a quarter of India's. Tea brands compete on the caddy and pouch as much as the blend.

Jute

As of December 2025, 89 of India's 120 composite jute mills are in West Bengal. Jute gives local brands a natural material for carry bags and gift packs, if the design is good enough to keep.

Food labels

FSSAI's labelling FAQ says the FSSAI logo and licence number go on the label, and the veg or non-veg logo goes on the front of the pack. Your quality team confirms the rest.

AI in packaging design: today and next

Today: Adobe Firefly

Adobe says Firefly makes images from text, images or sketches, and has Generative Fill and Generative Expand. It also says its models are commercially safe and its outputs carry Content Credentials that show AI was used.

Next

Our view: moodboards and shelf mock-ups will get faster. Dielines, the legal panel and press colour still need a person. Want us to try it on your next pack? Ask us.

/ 06 Cost

What packaging design costs.

We do not publish a price list, because one pack and a full range differ a lot. Printing and materials are billed at the printer's own quote.

What affects the cost

  • How many SKUs: sizes, flavours and variants
  • A new structure, or artwork on a stock box or pouch
  • How many language versions of the front panel
  • Mandatory panel complexity: food, cosmetics or export packs carry more
  • Mock-ups, pack shots and print finishes such as foil

How we quote

  1. Send us your current pack, or the product and the shelf it will sit on.
  2. We list every SKU, size and language, and the panels each pack must carry.
  3. You get a quote with design per pack or range, and print apart at actuals. We send it within 2 working days.

What you get in the quote

  • SKUs, sizes and flavours, listed one by one
  • Language versions, mandatory panels and mock-ups, if you need them
  • Change rounds covered, and the files handed over, including the dieline

Ask any designer, including us, how many change rounds the fee covers.

Change is the only constant.

Pack not selling?

Send a photo of your pack on the shelf. We'll tell you what buyers miss.

Or leave your number. A strategist calls you in one working day.

We use these details only to call you back. Privacy notice.

Straight answers.

  • Yes. Our office is at Suite 508, Ambuja Neotia Eco Centre, Sector V, Salt Lake. We can meet you there, at your factory, or at your wholesaler's shop to see where your pack really sits. The design team works from that office.

  • Yes. Our language partners write the Bengali and Hindi, and our team checks it. If your pack sells mostly in Bengal, Bengali on the front can help. The legal details still follow the rules for your product. We plan the Bengali and English versions together.

  • About four to five months before Mahalaya. That leaves time for design, approvals, printing and getting stock to shops. If Mahalaya is less than three months away, a full new pack is usually too late. A sleeve or sticker over your current pack may still work.

  • We lay out the mandatory panel and flag what usually goes missing. As general guidance, Legal Metrology rules ask for declarations such as the month and year of manufacture, and food packs also carry the FSSAI logo and licence number. Your legal or quality team approves the final text. This is not legal advice.

  • Yes, we design them. West Bengal has 89 of India's 120 composite jute mills, so jute is close at hand. For export packs, the importing country's label rules apply as well, and your buyer or freight agent should confirm them before artwork is final.

  • It can, if you change everything at once. We keep the cues your buyers already know, such as the main colour, the shape or the brand mark, and fix what is holding the pack back. Then we show old and new packs side by side on the shelf before you decide.
