/ 01 Food packaging design

A pack people can readin two seconds.

Most food packs lose the shelf in two seconds, because the buyer cannot tell what it is, which flavour it is or why to pick it. PromotEdge designs food and beverage packaging for Indian brands: pouches, cartons, tubs, bottles and labels, with the label panels planned in and the front tested on the shelf and the app.

Here is what we usually see: a good food brand in a pack that looks like six others. Shelves are crowded, so small, clear choices win. Other products are on our packaging design page.

Your quality team confirms the label text. We make room for it and keep the front free to sell. Want us to look at your pack?

/ 03 What usually gets in the way

What usually gets in the way,and the way through.

“Our pack looks fine on screen and dull on the shelf.”

We test the front at arm's length, on a shelf mock-up beside real competitors.

“Buyers cannot tell our flavours or sizes apart.”

One layout with fixed places for brand, variant colour and key claim. A new flavour then takes days.

“The label text is long and the front looks crowded.”

We separate what the law asks for from what sells, and give each its own place.

“The photo on the pack does not match what is inside.”

We use your real product, shot well, and keep to claims you can prove. Food photography is a separate service.

“The pouch or tub we chose will not fill, seal or stack well.”

We ask your filling team early and design to the film, the printer and the line.

“It sells in shops and on Blinkit or Zepto, and one look cannot do both.”

We check the front at thumbnail size from the first sketch and deliver listing images.

Our beliefChange is the only constant.

/ 04 How we work

From shelf topress-ready files.

As planning guidance, one pack family of up to four SKUs usually takes six to eight weeks. We confirm the timeline in the quote. Our servicing team is based in cities across India.

  1. 01

Learn the product and the buyer

We meet your marketing, sales and production people.

  2. 02

    Go to the shelf

We buy your product and three rivals, in shops and online, and look as a buyer would.

  3. 03

    Design and test the front

Two or three routes, tested on a shelf and at phone size. Think creative, act on numbers: we say which we would pick.

  4. 04

    Fill every panel

Your team sends and approves the label text in writing. We lay it out.

  5. 05

Mock up and check with the printer

Printed samples, a colour proof and the printer's sign-off before a full run.

  6. 06

    Hand over

Final files, listing images and a range guide for the next flavour.

Tell us what’s not working. We’ll send you an honest one-page growth plan, free.

How we deliver it, and why

How your business model changes the plan

A D2C brand designs for the thumbnail first. A brand sold through distributors needs a pack that survives the carton and a small shop shelf. An export maker follows the destination country's label rules. For apps, see quick commerce.

  1. Read the shelf before drawing. Buyers compare packs side by side. Photos of your pack and rivals.
  2. Design the front for two seconds. Shoppers decide fast. Two or three routes on a shelf mock-up.
  3. Fit the pack to the line and the press. A pack the line cannot run costs a reprint. A dieline and the printer's sign-off.

Go deeper: label basics and one brand's pack story

Label basics from FSSAI

FSSAI's FAQ on the 2020 labelling rules says the product name and the veg or non-veg symbol go on the front, the symbol is not exempt on small packs, and the FSSAI logo must contrast with the background.

A pack that changed how a basic product sold

Packaging South Asia reports that Parachute coconut oil was first sold in 15-litre tins, and that in the 1980s Harsh Mariwala moved it into smaller branded packs and plastic. Rats gnawed early plastic packs, so Marico made a cylindrical one.

AI in packaging design: today and next

Today and next

Adobe says Firefly makes images from text prompts, edits with Generative Fill and Expand, and marks outputs with Content Credentials. Useful for mood boards. Our view: sketches get faster, while the printer's file and every label line stay checked by people. Ask us where AI fits yours.

/ 05 Cost

What affects the cost offood packaging design.

No price list. These things move the number.

No price list: design is quoted per project, after a free 30-minute strategist call and one-page plan for projects we think we can help. Printing is delivered through PEXORA, a joint venture of PromotEdge and Prodigy.

What affects the cost

  • How many SKUs, sizes and flavours
  • A new pack shape, or art on a stock pouch, tub or bottle
  • Design routes and change rounds
  • Language versions of the front panel
  • Label panel layout for the food rules
  • Printed mock-ups, finishes and listing images

How we quote

  1. You tell us the product, the shelf and your current packs
  2. We write a scope: SKUs, shapes, routes and rounds
  3. The quote comes within 2 working days, design on its own line

What you get in the quote

  • Design routes tested on shelf and phone
  • Editable files and dielines
  • Printing, materials and photography, shown separately

Ask any agency, including us: do we get the editable files, and who pays for a reprint caused by an artwork error?

/ 06 What happens next

What happensafter you ask.

For projects we think we can help, this is how it goes.

  1. 01

    A strategist calls you

A short, honest plan: what to fix first and what we would do. It is free.

  3. 03

A quote, if you want one

If you want to go ahead, we send a quote within 2 working days.

We confirm the timeline in the quote. Contracts start at 3 months, with 30 days' notice to stop.

Straight answers.

  • It is designing the pack your food is sold in: the shape, the front, the label panels and the printer's files. Good design makes the product easy to spot and understand, and correct on the back. It also has to suit the filling line and the printer.

  • FSSAI and other rules ask for details such as the product name, the veg or non-veg symbol and the FSSAI logo with licence number. We lay out the panels; your quality team confirms every line. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

  • It depends on SKUs, pack shape, design routes and languages. We quote against a written scope after one conversation, within 2 working days. Printing and materials are separate lines, so you can compare quotes on scope, not only the total.

  • As planning guidance, one pack family of up to four SKUs usually takes six to eight weeks to print-ready files. A new shape or slow approvals add time. Late label text is a common cause. We confirm the timeline in the quote.

  • Yes. We start from your product, the shelf and your printer, since a spice pouch, an ice cream tub and an atta bag behave differently. We have no published case in these categories yet, and we share relevant work when we talk. Tell us the product and where it will sell.

  • Yes. We check the front at thumbnail size from the first sketch and deliver listing images with the print files. Titles, ratings and ads are handled by our quick commerce marketing team, so the pack and the listing can be planned together.

  • Yes to both. Our servicing team is based in cities across India. We work hybrid and remotely, visit regularly and, when a job needs it, work at your site. We ask for your printer's specifications first, so the files suit the film, press and line.

  • No published case for this yet. In a first meeting we can look at your pack beside two competitors and say what we would change. Our food photography page shows how we shoot food, and you can send us a past pack.
