/ 01 Marketing for insurance

People buy the policy. They judge it at the claim.

People buy a policy once and judge it years later, at a claim or a renewal, so a lead is only the start. PromotEdge plans marketing for insurance companies, brokers and agent networks, on term, health and motor cover.

The aim is leads your team can close, more issued policies and more renewals, not just more forms filled. Our servicing team is based in cities across India.

Who sells changes the plan. An insurer needs a trusted name. A broker sells advice and choice. Agents and POSPs (point of sales persons, trained to sell simple ready-made policies) sell face to face, in their own town.

Insurance sits inside BFSI (banking, financial services and insurance). Selling through a bank or an app? See marketing for banks and fintech marketing.

India's insurance market is big and still thin per person. Health is now the largest line outside life.

Marketing for insurance in depth

The market in FY2024-25

In FY2024-25 the sector issued 41.84 crore policies (a crore is 10 million) and collected premiums of ₹11.93 lakh crore. Insurance penetration, premiums as a share of the economy, was 3.7 percent. Health insurance is now 41 percent of non-life premium, ahead of motor.

How buyers decide

Our view: term cover is a slow family choice judged on price and the insurer's name. Health cover is bought out of fear of a hospital bill, and motor in the last days before the old policy ends. Buyers drop out when a call comes too late, too often or in the wrong language.

What you can do, and what is not ours

You can fix call-back speed, keep one list with one owner per lead and record each opt-out once. You can ask your insurer for an approved kit. We cannot sell or advise on cover, set premiums or approve an ad, and we promise no claims or returns. Your insurer and compliance team decide those.

How we would deliver, and why each step

We start from leads, contact rate, issued policies and renewals by source, because cost per lead alone misleads. We test one product and one region for a quarter, because small tests are cheap to fix. We build the approved kit first, because every distributor ad needs sign-off.

Bodies to know

General Insurance Council: its members include general, health and reinsurance insurers, and its site gives its purpose as protecting the interests of policyholders.

Life Insurance Council: an industry body whose site carries consumer guidance, industry statistics, regulations and awareness campaigns. It says it does not sell insurance.

Not sure whether renewals or recruitment comes first? Let's look at your numbers together. Compare your numbers

/ 05 What usually gets in the way

What gets in the wayand the way through.

“We buy thousands of leads. Our call centre reaches few.”

Add qualifying questions before the form and offer a call-back slot. Our lead generation work reports issued policies by source.

“The same customer gets several calls a day, then blocks us.”

Keep one list, one owner per lead, one call window, and record each opt-out once.

“Buyers pick the lowest premium on a comparison site.”

Compete on what a price table can't show: advice, a named person, help at claim time. Content marketing turns your claim process into plain explainers.

“We notice renewals leaking only after policies lapse.”

Start reminders weeks before the due date, to customers who agreed. Marketing automation sends them by WhatsApp, SMS and email.

“We need many more agents and POSPs, and new ones stop selling.”

Treat recruitment as marketing. Employer branding shows what the job involves, in the local language.

“Our agents want to post, but every post needs approval.”

Build a kit of posts approved once by the insurer, for agents to share on social media. IRDAI (the insurance regulator) wants a distributor's ad approved in writing first.

“Our ads are in English. Most of our buyers are not.”

Plan local-language campaigns, with every disclosure checked in that language.

Does your call centre sound like one of these? Tell us which, and we'll tell you where we'd start. Show us your leads

/ 06 Cost

What affects the cost of marketing for insurance.

No price list. These things move the number.

We don't publish a price list. We quote after a free 30-minute strategist call. Media and production are billed at actuals.

What affects the cost

  • Products. Term, health and motor each need their own message.
  • Renewals and recruitment. Reminder journeys, and how many agents or POSPs you need.

How we quote

  1. A free 30-minute strategist call
  2. We study your leads, then send a one-page plan
  3. A written quote follows within 2 working days

What you get in the quote

  • The pilot plan
  • Media and production, item by item

How it is billed

Way of workingWhen it fits
Pilot quarterTimeline confirmed in the quote
Monthly retainerMinimum 3 months, 30 days' notice to stop
Media at actualsYou approve every rate

Ask every agency to report issued policies, not just cost per lead.

/ 07 Rules that shape insurance marketing

IRDAI, TRAI and the data law, in plain words.

IRDAI sets the rules for ads, TRAI (the telecom regulator) for calls and messages, and the data law for customer data.

Ads must be fair and true. They must reflect risks, not hide exclusions or use illegible text, and show the insurer's registered name with its trade name or logo. Social posts count.

Product ads carry the UIN, the product's unique ID number.

Distributors sell the insurer's product. Their ad must not look as if the policy is theirs, and needs the insurer's written approval first.

Customer data needs consent. Proposal-form details can't go to a third party without explicit consent. The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, 2025 ask for clear consent notices. People may withdraw consent at any time.

Sales calls follow TRAI's rules. Promotional calls use the 140 series, not ordinary 10-digit numbers. Consent in an ongoing transaction lasts 7 days. After an opt-out, no new request for 90 days.

Your compliance team signs off every piece. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

Insurer, broker or agent network?

Tell us where your leads go cold. We'll show you where the policies are.

Or leave your number. A strategist calls you in one working day.

We use these details only to call you back. Privacy notice.

Straight answers.

  • Ask every agency, including us, four things. Will you report issued policies and renewals, not just leads? How do you record consent before a sales call? Can you work in our customers' languages? How will agents' posts get approved, and how fast?

  • It depends on your products, lead volume, renewal work, recruitment and languages. Media and production are billed at actuals, and you approve each rate. We don't publish a price list. You get a written quote within 2 working days of the first call.

  • IRDAI's 2024 regulations say ads must be fair and true, reflect risks and not hide exclusions. An insurer shows its registered name with its trade name or logo, and product ads carry the UIN. A broker's or agent's ad, including social posts, needs the insurer's written approval. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

  • A POSP is a point of sales person. For life insurance, IRDAI's rules say a POSP must be at least 18 and have passed class 10. They finish 15 hours of training, pass an exam, and sell only simple products such as pure term plans. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

  • Start small. Google counts insurance agents as individual practitioners, so an agent can have a Business Profile in their own name. Add a simple page, a WhatsApp button and posts the insurer has approved. Then ask happy customers for reviews and referrals.
