/ 01 India market entry strategy

India is not one market.Start with one or two cities.

A product that sells well at home is still a stranger in a new market, where buyers don't know the name or trust it yet. PromotEdge plans the marketing side of your entry, for foreign brands coming in and Indian brands moving into a new state, so your first cities bring enquiries and dealers.

Whether you sell B2B (to other businesses), B2C (to consumers) or D2C (direct to customers online), the question is the same: why should a stranger here pick you? We give no legal, tax or foreign direct investment (FDI) advice. Take those to your lawyers first.

We start with logic and your numbers. Which cities already send you enquiries, or search for what you sell? Then we pick one or two, not ten. You may well start in Mumbai, Delhi NCR or Bangalore. Let the numbers choose, not habit.

A foreign name carries doubts a local name doesn't: who will service it, will spares arrive, is the price an import price? An Indian brand has another problem: dealers who trust your family name in one state won't know you in the next. For the wider launch plan, see go-to-market strategy.

/ 03 Common hurdles

What usually gets in the way,and the way through.

“Our product sells well abroad, but nobody here has heard of us.”

A national launch mostly buys silence. We pick one or two cities where buyers already search for your product.

“Buyers ask where it is made and who will service it.”

These are doubts about trust. Proof answers them: stock in India, a named service contact, spares.

“We want ten cities in the first year, because India is so big.”

Big is the reason to go slowly. Test in one or two, then add states on evidence.

“Our price looks high next to Indian brands, or oddly low.”

Buyers read price as a signal. We look at how it is shown. The price stays yours to set.

“We are strong in one state, and the next state isn't responding.”

Home loyalty doesn't travel. We rebuild the proof for the new state, one city at a time.

/ 04 How we work

From a map of Indiato one city that works.

  1. 01

    Listen to your sales team

Your sales head tells us where orders come from and where deals stall.

  2. 02

    Shortlist the cities

Enquiry and search numbers, rival presence and dealer cover. We argue for one or two. You decide.

  3. 03

Talk to buyers and dealers there

Short calls: what do they doubt, and who do they buy from today?

  4. 04

Build the first-city plan and test it small

Buyer map, proof, language, channels, dealer kit and price view in one plan. We read the numbers every week.

  5. 05

Add a state, or say no

Good results should repeat, not happen by luck. If the numbers hold, we add the next state. If not, we fix the plan.

Tell us what’s not working. We’ll send you an honest one-page growth plan, free.

More on this

How we deliver it, and why

How your business model changes the plan

A dealer-led B2B (business-to-business) maker needs dealer cover and service first. A D2C (direct-to-consumer) brand starts with marketplaces, quick commerce and search. A services firm starts with a few named buyers. An exporter shipping to India needs importer partners and clear price rules.

  1. Start from your own numbers. Enquiries and searches show where buyers already are, with no guesswork. A ranked city list.
  2. List what a stranger doubts. A foreign name carries questions on service, spares and price. A doubt-and-proof sheet.
  3. Run a small test with agreed numbers. One city teaches more than ten thin ones. A weekly scorecard.
  4. Add a state only on evidence. Money spread across a country is thin everywhere. A written rule: add, hold or stop.

IKEA in Hyderabad

Al Jazeera reported on 10 August 2018 that IKEA had opened its first India store in Hyderabad, about 400,000 square feet. Prices ran from a serving bowl at 349 rupees to a wing chair at 15,990 rupees, and the restaurant served Indian versions of IKEA dishes beside Indian staples such as biryani. The lesson for an entry plan: a foreign name can show on day one that it has thought about Indian prices and tastes.

AI in market entry: today and next

Today: desk research

Google's Deep Research in Gemini drafts a research plan you can edit, then analyses many sources and writes a report, usually in about 5 to 10 minutes. It is a fast first pass on a city or a rival. You still check each source before you decide anything.

Today: first-city enquiries

Meta says Business AI on the WhatsApp Business app answers customer questions 24/7 in all native Indian languages, and the owner can take over a chat at any time. Useful for a small first-city test.

/ 05 Cost

What affects the cost of India market entry planning.

We don't publish a price list. We quote against a written scope within 2 working days. Test media spend is shown at actuals first.

What affects the cost

  • How many cities and states are on the shortlist
  • Your own numbers only, or dealer and buyer calls too
  • Whether we build the dealer kit and run the test, or hand over the plan

How we quote

  1. We talk about your product and what you want from India
  2. We read your numbers and the rivals in your first cities
  3. We write down the cities, languages and test in scope

What you get in the quote

  • The cities, states and languages in scope
  • The number of buyer and dealer calls
  • Whether the first-city test is included

Legal and registration fees go to your own advisers. Comparing quotes? Ask whether the agency will talk to dealers and test in one city first. Not sure what to test? Start with market research.

/ 06 What happens next

What happensafter you ask.

For projects we think we can help, this is how it goes.

  1. 01

    A strategist calls you

In one working day: a 30-minute call with one of our strategists about your business and what is not working.

  2. 02

    You get a 1-page plan

A short, honest plan: what to fix first and what we would do. It is free.

  3. 03

A quote, if you want one

If you want to go ahead, we send a quote within 2 working days.

We confirm the timeline in the quote. Contracts start at 3 months, with 30 days' notice to stop.

We'd rather show you results than a nice presentation.

Straight answers.

  • It is the plan for how a business starts selling in a new market. For India, the marketing side covers the first cities, the buyers, languages and channels, dealers or distributors, and how the price is shown. Company set-up and the legal route are separate, for your lawyers.

  • It depends on your product and buyers, so no one route fits every brand. Common routes are distributors, dealers, marketplaces or your own sales team. We compare them on cost per lead, speed of learning and control, then test two, not all. The legal side is for your advisers.

  • No. We give no legal, tax, company registration or foreign direct investment advice, and we won't guess at it. Please ask your lawyers and chartered accountant first. We work beside them on the marketing side: cities, buyers, languages, channels and dealers.

  • The ones where buyers already look for what you sell and where you can serve them. We read your enquiries, visits, searches and rival presence by city, then choose one or two. A big city with no dealer cover can wait. See how we plan from Pune or Hyderabad.

  • We agree the numbers before any spend: enquiries by city, qualified leads (people who can really buy), dealer sign-ups and cost per lead (what you pay, on average, for one enquiry). You see them weekly during the test, with your sales head in the room.

  • Yes. Our servicing team is based in cities across India, and we work hybrid and remotely, by phone and video. We visit you in your Indian city regularly, and when a job needs it, we place our team at your plant or office.
