D2C brands from East India
The D2C story isn't only Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru. These brands started in Kolkata, plus one from Gangtok in Sikkim.
| Brand | Category | Founded | City | How it sells (verified) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Country Bean | Food and beverage | 2017 | Kolkata | own website |
| Nestasia | Home and decor | 2019 | Kolkata | own website, marketplaces, own stores |
| Rosada | Kids | 2014 | Kolkata | own website, marketplaces, retail |
| Tearaja | Food and beverage | 2015 | Kolkata | own website, marketplaces |
| NE Origins | Food and beverage | 2020 | Gangtok | own website |
We found no brand from Guwahati or Bhubaneswar that we could source properly. That doesn't mean there are none. NE Origins works partly as a marketplace for products from the Northeast.
What do these brands have in common?
- A clear buyer and a clear promise. Each one is built around a specific need, such as natural skincare, affordable audio, better sleep or honest snacks.
- They started online. Selling direct let them launch across India without a distribution network, and learn from every order.
- They moved to more channels. Several now sell on marketplaces and quick-commerce apps, and in shops.
- Content and creators did much of the selling. Social media built trust for names people hadn't heard of, helped by reviews and creators.
Our guide What is D2C? explains how the model works and the numbers behind one order. For how D2C differs from selling to consumers through shops (B2C), read D2C vs B2C.
How to use this list
Use it to study how brands in your category present themselves. Look at their promise, website, packaging, reviews and the channels they sell on. Check each brand's current website before you rely on a detail. Channels and ownership change. We update the list when we re-check the sources.
Why isn't Nykaa on the list?
Nykaa sells many other companies' products as well as its own brands. So it works mainly as a marketplace and retailer. That makes it a different model from a brand selling its own products direct. So we left it out of the tables.
Are these brands still D2C?
Many have grown into omnichannel brands. They sell online and in shops. Some are now owned by, or part-owned by, large consumer companies. For example, Beardo is now owned by Marico, and Emami holds a stake in The Man Company. They still sell direct, but they are no longer independent start-ups.
What can a new D2C brand learn from this list?
- Pick a category where you can make a real difference buyers notice.
- Own your website and customer data from day one, even if marketplaces bring more sales at first.
- Plan for the cost of winning customers, and for repeat orders. Performance marketing brings the first order; retention brings the profit.
- Add channels in a planned way. Selling on marketplaces and quick commerce is ecommerce marketing.
We plan this mix for consumer brands, judged on margin and repeat orders. See our D2C and ecommerce marketing page.
