/ 01 The short answer

What is the differencebetween D2C and B2C?

B2C (business to consumer) means a business sells to ordinary buyers rather than to other companies. D2C (direct to consumer) means a brand sells to those buyers directly, without distributors or shops in between.

So B2C is about who you sell to, and D2C is about the route you take to reach them.

PromotEdge helps consumer brands choose their routes to the buyer and plan marketing for each, and also helps dealer-based businesses such as building materials, machinery and FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods), judged on orders and qualified enquiries.

Who this is for: anyone choosing how to sell. If you sell to dealers and also to the public, jump to Can one business be B2B and B2C at the same time?

Every D2C brand is B2C, but not every B2C business is D2C. A biscuit brand sold only through kirana shops is B2C. The same brand selling on its own website is B2C and D2C. Most brands in India do both.

B2B (business to business) is the other big model: selling to companies, such as a steel maker selling to builders. Marketplaces sit in the middle, connecting many sellers with many buyers.

Key takeaways
  • B2C describes the buyer: consumers, not companies.
  • D2C describes the route: the brand sells directly, without distributors or retailers.
  • A brand can be B2C without being D2C, if it sells only through shops or marketplaces.
  • B2B sells to businesses, with longer decisions, more people involved and bigger orders.
  • Most Indian consumer brands mix routes: their own website, marketplaces, quick commerce (apps that deliver in minutes) and shops.

Our beliefWe start with logic and your numbers, not with ideas we happen to like.

What is B2C?

B2C (business to consumer) covers any business that sells to individuals for their own use: soap, phones, clothes, food delivery, insurance for families. It says nothing about the route. A B2C brand can sell through shops, marketplaces, its own website or all three.

What is D2C?

D2C (direct to consumer) is one route a B2C brand can take: selling straight to buyers through its own website, app, social media or WhatsApp. The brand handles marketing, payment, delivery and customer care, and keeps the customer relationship. Our guide What is D2C? explains how it works and the numbers behind one order.

Is D2C a part of B2C?

Yes. D2C is a way of doing B2C. Think of B2C as the customer and D2C as the road. Some B2C brands use only the retail road, some only the direct road, and most use both.

Where do B2B and marketplaces fit?

B2B (business to business) means selling to other businesses. Buyers compare carefully, several people approve the purchase, and the seller usually follows up through a sales team or dealers.

A marketplace connects many sellers with many buyers on one platform. Take Desi Machines, a PromotEdge group company that we built end to end. It helps people who buy and own construction equipment in India compare machines and reach equipment brands, dealers and financiers. That is a B2B marketplace: the platform sits between brands and buyers, which is the opposite of D2C.

What other business models are there?

  • C2C (consumer to consumer): people selling to each other, such as used phones or furniture on a classifieds app. The platform earns from listings or fees.
  • B2B2C (business to business to consumer): a company sells through another business that serves the end buyer. For example, an insurer that sells policies through a bank's app.
  • D2C: a brand selling straight to consumers, as above.
  • Marketplace: a platform that hosts many sellers. It can be B2C, B2B or C2C.

Can one business be B2B and B2C at the same time?

Yes, and many are. A paint company sells to homeowners (B2C) and to builders and contractors (B2B). A tile maker might sell online to families (D2C) and through dealers to construction firms (B2B). Each side needs its own marketing, prices and sales process, but they can share one brand.

The mistake to avoid is marketing to both in the same way. A homeowner wants to see the finished room and the price. A builder wants specifications, bulk rates, credit terms and delivery schedules.

Examples of each model in India

ModelTypical exampleHow they usually sell
B2C through retailPackaged food, soaps, paints for homesDistributors, kirana and modern retail, plus marketplaces
D2CSkincare, apparel, mattresses, snacks started onlineOwn website and app, social media, marketplaces, later shops
B2BSteel, cement, industrial machinery, software for companiesSales teams, dealers, tenders, trade shows, search and LinkedIn
B2B marketplaceConstruction equipment (for example, Desi Machines)Buyers compare and enquire; brands and dealers follow up

D2C vs B2C: which should you choose?

If you sell to consumers, the real question is which routes to use, and in what order.

Your situationStart withWhy
New brand, product people buy online, good marginD2C plus one marketplaceFast to launch, and you learn from every buyer
Everyday product bought at the corner shopRetail and distribution, then add D2CMost buyers still pick it up in a shop
Low-price product, heavy to shipRetail and quick commerceDelivery cost can eat the margin on direct orders
Product that needs explaining or trustD2C with content and creatorsYou control the story and answer questions directly
Selling to companies or dealersB2B: search, LinkedIn, trade shows, sales follow-upDecisions are slow and involve several people

These are starting points. Many brands begin with D2C to learn fast and add shops later, or the other way round.

How is marketing different in D2C and B2B?

  • D2C is judged order by order: what it cost to win a customer and how often they buy again. It leans on social and search ads, creators, and email or WhatsApp. This is where performance marketing, meaning ads judged on orders and enquiries, does most of the work.
  • B2C through retail leans on mass media, shop displays, discounts and schemes for retailers and keeping the product in stock where people buy.
  • B2B is judged lead by lead: whether enquiries come from real buyers and turn into orders. It leans on search, LinkedIn and trade shows. See LinkedIn and B2B lead generation.

If you sell on your own store and on marketplaces, both need to work together. That is ecommerce marketing, and our D2C and ecommerce marketing page explains how we plan it.

/ 03 Decide your route

How to choose between D2C, retailand B2B in four steps

  1. 01

    Name your buyer

A person buying for themselves, or a company buying for its work? That decides B2C or B2B.

  2. 02

    Find where they buy today

Online, at the corner shop, through a dealer or by tender? Start where the buying already happens.

  3. 03

    Do the order maths

For each route, subtract product, delivery, platform or trade margins and marketing from the price. Keep the routes that leave a profit.

  4. 04

    Test small, then scale

Run one route for a few months, track cost per order or per qualified lead (an enquiry from someone who can really buy), and add the next route only when the first one pays.

Straight answers.

  • B2C is about who you sell to: consumers. D2C is about how you reach them: directly, without distributors or shops. So D2C is one way of doing B2C. A brand that sells only through retail shops is B2C but not D2C, while a brand that sells on its own site is both.

  • Yes. D2C brands sell to consumers, so they are B2C. But not every B2C brand is D2C. A brand that sells only through distributors and shops is B2C without being D2C, because someone else sits between the brand and the buyer. Direct selling is what makes it D2C.

  • Neither is better on its own, because D2C is one route within B2C. It suits products people buy online, with a good margin and a reason to buy again. If your product needs touch, trial or quick delivery, shops or marketplaces may suit you better, or a mix of both.

  • B2B sells to companies, with slower decisions, more approvers and bigger orders. B2C sells to individuals, who decide faster and mostly for themselves. So B2B marketing leans on proof, trust and follow-up, while B2C leans more on reach, feeling and price. The same product can be sold both ways.

  • Yes. Many start online and add shops or quick-commerce apps later. They stay D2C on the channels they run themselves, such as their own website and app. On shops and apps run by others, the retailer or platform owns the customer relationship, so the brand has less data and less control.

  • No. A marketplace connects many sellers with many buyers, so the platform sits between the brand and the customer. The platform owns the customer relationship and the data. A brand can sell on a marketplace and also run its own D2C site, which many Indian brands do.
