What Google says
We read Google's SEO starter guide on 9 October 2026. It was last updated on 10 December 2025. Google describes SEO as helping search engines understand your content and helping users find your site. These are the points from the guide that matter most:
- Some changes can take effect in a few hours. Others can take several months.
- There are no secrets that will automatically rank your site first in Google.
- There is no guarantee that a given site will be added to Google's index.
- If you are short of time, you might consider hiring a professional.
What SEO work covers
This is our own description of the work, not a Google list.
- Content: pages that answer what people really ask. See keyword research.
- Technical set-up: making sure search engines can reach and read your site. See technical SEO.
- Links: earning links from other sites. See backlinks.
Common mistakes
- Expecting results in a week.
- Believing anyone who guarantees the first place on Google. Google's guide says no secret does that.
- Buying links or using tricks that Google calls spam.
- Counting visits and ignoring enquiries. Leads are what the business needs.
Related terms
- SERP (search engine results page): the page of results Google shows after a search.
- Keyword research: finding the words your buyers search for.
- On-page SEO: changes you make on the page itself.
- Off-page SEO: work done away from your own site.
- Local SEO: making your business show up for searches near you.
