Definition

POSM full form is point-of-sale material (some say point-of-sale merchandising). POSM is the branded material placed where the buyer decides and pays: posters, standees, danglers, shelf strips, counter displays and branded racks.

In India, many buying decisions happen at the counter. A shopper asks the retailer for "a good biscuit" or "a strong adhesive", and the brand they see right there often wins. POSM puts your brand in that moment.

Common types of POSM

ItemWhat it isWhere it works
DanglerA card hanging from the ceiling or shelfKirana stores, chemists
Wobbler / shelf talkerA small card that sticks out from the shelfSupermarket aisles
StandeeA free-standing cut-out or roll-up bannerStore entrances, showrooms
Counter displayA small stand holding the product at the tillImpulse buys: snacks, batteries
Branded rack or chillerShelving or fridges in brand coloursPackaged foods and beverages
Posters and window decalsPrinted ads on walls and glassAny shop front

How is POSM different from signage?

Signage, such as a glow sign board above the shop, tells people where the shop is and which brands it sells. POSM works inside, at the shelf and the counter, to influence what the buyer picks.

How to make POSM work

  • Design for the real shop: small counters, crowded shelves and poor light.
  • Keep one clear message and the price or offer, readable in a few seconds.
  • Get the retailer's agreement, or the material ends up in a corner.
  • Check placement with photos from the field, and refresh it every season.

Related terms

  • BTL (below the line): face-to-face and in-store marketing, which includes POSM.
  • Visual merchandising: arranging products and displays so they sell better.
  • OOH (out of home): outdoor ads that reach people before they reach the shop.

We design and install in-store material through our signage and retail branding service.

Change is the only constant.

Straight answers.

  • Point-of-sale material, sometimes called point-of-sale merchandising.

  • Danglers, wobblers, standees, counter displays, branded racks, posters and window decals. A dangler is a card hanging from the ceiling or shelf, and a standee is a free-standing cut-out or roll-up banner. Danglers suit kirana stores and chemists, and counter displays suit impulse buys such as snacks and batteries.

  • Yes. POSM is in-store marketing, which falls under BTL (below the line), the face-to-face and in-store kind of marketing. It works inside the shop, at the shelf and the counter, to influence what the buyer picks. Signage above the shop is different, because it tells people where the shop is.

  • Design for the real shop: small counters, crowded shelves and poor light. Keep one clear message and the price or offer, readable in a few seconds. Get the retailer's agreement, or the material ends up in a corner. Check placement with photos from the field, and refresh it every season.
