Definition

OOH full form is out of home. Out-of-home (OOH) advertising means any ad people see outside their homes: hoardings, bus shelters, metro stations, airports, malls and the sides of buses. DOOH (digital out of home) is the screen version, such as LED screens.

OOH shows your brand to people on the move in a chosen area. It does so again and again. It is strong for local launches and for retail and real estate. It also reminds people of a brand close to where they buy.

Types of OOH advertising

  • Hoardings and billboards: large boards on roads and highways, and at junctions.
  • Transit: buses, metro trains, stations, auto-rickshaws and cabs.
  • Street furniture: bus shelters and kiosks, plus pole boards.
  • Airports and malls: places where specific audiences spend time.
  • DOOH: LED screens and digital panels that can show several ads in rotation and change by time of day.

Is OOH still growing in India?

Yes. Out-of-home media grew 13% in 2025, according to the FICCI-EY media and entertainment report (March 2026), while linear TV advertising fell 10%.

How do you measure OOH?

You can't count clicks on a hoarding. Planners estimate how many people pass a site from traffic and footfall. They also judge visibility and size, and how long people can see it. For business results, put a short web link, a QR code or a separate phone number on the ad, and watch branded searches and enquiries from that area.

Related terms

  • ATL (above the line): mass media, of which OOH is one part.
  • DOOH: digital out-of-home screens.
  • POSM: point-of-sale material inside shops, the last step after OOH.

  • Out of home. OOH advertising is any ad people see outside their homes.

  • OOH covers all outdoor ads, such as printed hoardings and bus shelters. DOOH is the digital part: LED screens and digital panels that can show several ads in rotation and change by time of day. Both show your brand to people on the move in a chosen area.

  • A hoarding is ATL: mass media that everyone passing can see. On-ground events and shop displays are BTL, which is direct, local work. OOH is one part of ATL. POSM, the point-of-sale material inside shops, is the last step after OOH.
