Definition

CPM stands for cost per mille, which means cost per thousand views. It is the price you pay for every 1,000 times your ad is shown.

Some ads are sold by clicks. Others are sold by views. When you pay for views, CPM is the number that tells you what each 1,000 of them cost.

What CPM means

The M in CPM comes from the Latin word mille, which means thousand. A view is called an impression. One impression is one time your ad is shown on someone's screen. It does not mean the person read it or clicked it.

The formula

CPM = (money spent ÷ impressions) × 1,000

A made-up example in rupees

A shoe shop spends ₹20,000 on an ad. The ad is shown 4,00,000 times. Divide 4,00,000 by 1,000 and you get 400. Now divide ₹20,000 by 400. The CPM is ₹50.

Say 2,000 people click that ad. The CTR (click-through rate) is 0.5%. The CPC (cost per click) is ₹10. It is one ad and one budget, but three different numbers.

What Google says about CPM

Google Ads Help describes CPM as a way to bid where you pay per one thousand views on the Google Display Network. That is the network where Google shows ads on other websites and apps. Google also has viewable CPM, or vCPM. With vCPM, you pay only when your ad can be seen. We read this page on 9 October 2026.

Other platforms may count and charge in their own way. Read each platform's help page before you compare numbers.

When CPM is the number to watch

CPM suits ads whose job is to be seen, such as the opening of a new showroom or the launch of a new product. If the ad's job is to bring an enquiry, watch the cost per click and the CPL (cost per lead) as well.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the lowest CPM. Cheap views can go to people who will never buy.
  • Ignoring frequency. If the same few people see your ad again and again, the CPM can look fine while your real reach stays small. Read about reach and frequency.
  • Comparing CPM across platforms without checking what each one counts as a view.
  • Stopping at CPM. A view is not a sale. Track enquiries and orders too.

Related terms

  • CTR (click-through rate): the share of people who saw the ad and clicked it.
  • CPC (cost per click): what you pay each time someone clicks.
  • CPL (cost per lead): what you pay to get one enquiry.
  • Reach and frequency: how many people saw the ad, and how often.
  • ROAS (return on ad spend): the sales you get back for each rupee of ad spend.

Straight answers.

  • Cost per mille. Mille is Latin for thousand, so it means cost per thousand impressions.

  • Divide the money spent by the number of impressions, then multiply by 1,000. Or divide the impressions by 1,000 first. If a shoe shop spends ₹20,000 and its ad is shown 4,00,000 times, that is 400, and ₹20,000 ÷ 400 gives a CPM of ₹50.

  • No. A low CPM only means views are cheap. The views may reach people who will not click or buy, so check clicks and enquiries as well. Watch frequency too: if the same few people see your ad again and again, the CPM can look fine while your real reach stays small.

  • CPM suits ads whose job is to be seen, such as the opening of a new showroom or the launch of a new product. If the ad's job is to bring an enquiry, watch the cost per click and the CPL (cost per lead) as well.
