Definition

CPC stands for cost per click. It is the amount an advertiser pays each time someone clicks an ad. You work it out by dividing the money spent by the number of clicks.

With click-based ads, you do not pay when the ad is only shown. You pay when someone clicks it. CPC tells you the average price of one such click.

What CPC means

Google Ads Help says cost-per-click bidding means you pay for each click on your ads. This way of buying ads is also called pay per click, or PPC (pay per click). Search ads and many social media ads can be bought this way.

Max CPC and actual CPC

Google Ads Help separates two numbers. Your max CPC is the highest amount you are willing to pay for a click. The final amount you are charged for a click is your actual CPC. The actual CPC can be lower than your maximum, so always read the actual figure in your report.

The formula

CPC = money spent ÷ number of clicks

A made-up example in rupees

A coaching class spends ₹1,800 on an ad and gets 150 clicks. The CPC is ₹12.

Out of those 150 visitors, 6 fill the enquiry form. The conversion rate is 4%. The cost of each enquiry is ₹1,800 ÷ 6, which is ₹300. That last number is the CPL (cost per lead). It matters more than the CPC, because the class needs enquiries, not clicks.

Is there a normal CPC in India?

We do not quote a range. CPC is not a fixed price. It differs by platform, by search word, by audience and by competition, and any range we found online could not be tied to a source we can name. Your own account report shows what you actually paid.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing the lowest CPC. A cheap click from the wrong person still costs money and brings no sale.
  • Looking at CPC without looking at conversions. Two ads with the same CPC can have very different CPL.
  • Setting no tracking, so you cannot tell which clicks led to a call, a form or an order.
  • Comparing the CPC of a search ad with the CPC of a social media ad. People behave differently on each.

Related terms

  • CTR (click-through rate): the share of people who saw the ad and clicked it.
  • CPM (cost per thousand views): what you pay for every 1,000 views.
  • CPL (cost per lead): what you pay to get one enquiry.
  • CAC (customer acquisition cost): what you pay to win one paying customer.
  • ROAS (return on ad spend): the sales you get back for each rupee of ad spend.
  • Conversion rate: the share of visitors who buy, call or fill a form.

Straight answers.

  • Cost per click. It is what an advertiser pays each time someone clicks an ad.

  • Max CPC is the most you are willing to pay for a click. Actual CPC is the final amount you are charged, which can be lower. So always read the actual figure in your report. For example, ₹1,800 spent on 150 clicks is an average CPC of ₹12.

  • No. A low CPC with no enquiries wastes money. Check the cost per enquiry or per sale as well. In a made-up example, a coaching class pays ₹12 a click, but only 6 of 150 visitors fill the form, so each enquiry costs ₹300. That last number matters more, because the class needs enquiries, not clicks.
