How a dealer loyalty program works
- Enrol: dealers join the scheme, often with a simple form or an app.
- Earn: they collect points for purchases, for paying on time, for selling a new product or for hitting a target.
- Redeem: they swap points for rewards, such as gifts, vouchers, cash back or a trip.
- Track: you keep a record of every point and every reward.
A made-up example in rupees
Say a tile maker gives a dealer 1 point for every ₹10,000 of purchases. Each point is worth ₹100 as a reward. This is a made-up example with made-up numbers.
- The dealer buys ₹8,00,000 in a quarter.
- Points earned: ₹8,00,000 ÷ ₹10,000 = 80 points.
- Reward value: 80 × ₹100 = ₹8,000.
- That is 1% of the purchases: ₹8,000 ÷ ₹8,00,000.
Now check the other side. If the scheme makes dealers buy more than they would have, the extra sales should be worth more than the rewards you pay. If dealers would have bought the same amount anyway, the scheme only costs money. Compare against a group of dealers who are not in the scheme, if you can.
How it works for an Indian business
A dealer scheme works well when it is simple. A dealer who needs a calculator to see the reward will lose interest. Say the rules in plain words and in the dealer's language. Pay on time. Hold a dealer meet to launch the scheme and to hand over rewards in public. People like to be seen.
Ask your accountant how rewards and gifts are treated for tax and for GST (goods and services tax), before you launch.
Common mistakes
- Rules too complex to follow.
- Rewards that arrive late or never.
- A target that only the largest dealers can hit, so small dealers give up.
- No record of who earned what.
- Never checking if the scheme brings more sales than it costs.
