What AI is good at, and what it is not
Think of an AI tool as a fast, tireless junior. It drafts, sorts and suggests in seconds. It also gets facts wrong and sounds like everyone else if you let it.
- Good at: first drafts, outlines, summaries, translations, ideas, ad variations, answering common questions and reports.
- Not good at: knowing your buyers, choosing your price, spotting a wrong fact, or deciding what your brand should say.
- So the job is: you set the goal and the facts, the tool speeds the work, and a person checks the result against enquiries and sales.
Judge every tool by what it changes in your numbers, not by how clever it feels.
AI tools that work now, by job
We name tools as examples. Features, plans and prices change often, so check each maker's page before you buy. We read the pages below on 10 October 2026.
- Writing, research and ideas: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are general assistants. Use them for outlines, first drafts, summaries and questions about your own material.
- Indian languages: Bhashini is the government's language platform, run under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). It offers translation and speech tools through APIs (connections that other software can use). Sources give different language counts, so check bhashini.gov.in for the current list. Have a native speaker check every translation.
- Google Ads: AI Max for Search is a set of optional AI features inside Search campaigns. Google's help page lists three parts: matching searches beyond your keywords, text customisation, and final URL expansion, which can send people to other pages on your site. It was launched in beta in May 2025. Read Google's AI Max page and set URL exclusions for pages you do not want shown. See also Performance Max.
- Meta ads: Advantage+ campaigns let Meta's AI choose audience, placement and budget, and its creative tools suggest text and image versions of an ad. Give the system good conversion tracking, because it learns from that.
- WhatsApp: Meta says its business AI is rolling out to businesses in India. Deccan Herald reported on 8 July 2026, from the WhatsApp Business Summit in Mumbai, that it answers customer questions, recommends products, captures leads and hands hard cases to a person. Availability is phased, so check inside your WhatsApp Business app.
- Analytics: Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is free and explains your numbers. Match it against your own lead record.
- Design, video and voice: tools such as Canva and Adobe Firefly make images, and others make video or voice. If an ad uses AI-made people or products that do not exist, the new ASCI rules may need a label (see below).
- Automation: tools such as Zapier and Make connect your forms, sheets and messages, so a new enquiry reaches the right person without typing.
PromotEdge offers AI marketing, AI search optimisation and AI automation systems to set these up and measure them.
Rules to follow in India
- ASCI and AI-made ads. On 29 September 2026, the Advertising Standards Council of India issued rules on labelling AI-generated content in ads. They need a label when AI content could change how a buyer decides, such as AI-made influencers or products that do not exist. They take effect three months after publication, around the end of December 2026. Read our October 2026 update.
- Personal data. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and its Rules, notified in November 2025, bring duties in phases. Sources we read put the first parts around 13 or 14 November 2026 and the main duties on 14 May 2027, and they differ on which rule falls where. Check the official text. In practice, do not paste customers' names, numbers or other personal details into a public AI tool, and keep consent records.
- Platform policies. Google and Meta have ad policies that apply to AI-made ads too. Read them before you scale.

How to choose a tool, in five steps
- Write the job in one line. Example: "cut first drafts from three hours to one" or "answer WhatsApp questions after 8 pm".
- Try the free or cheapest plan on real work, not on a demo.
- Run it for 30 days and note the time saved and the enquiries or sales it touched.
- Keep a person in charge of facts, tone and sign-off.
- Keep what pays. Cancel the rest, and do not collect subscriptions.
A starter stack that covers most small businesses
- One general assistant for drafting and research.
- The AI features already inside your Google and Meta ad accounts, with conversion tracking set up properly.
- GA4 for reports, plus your own lead sheet.
- WhatsApp Business, with its AI features if you are eligible.
- One design tool for images, and one automation tool for forms and follow-ups.
Start there. Add a paid specialist tool only when you can name the problem it will fix.
Mistakes we see
- Publishing raw AI text. It can state wrong facts with confidence and sounds like every other brand.
- Pasting customer data into public tools.
- Using a translation without a native speaker's check.
- Switching on every automatic feature in an ad account and never looking at the search terms or pages it picks.
- Skipping the label on AI-made people or products in ads.
- Buying a dozen tools and using three.
What to expect next
This is our view, based on what the platforms are doing now. It is not a forecast we can prove.
- AI becomes the default inside ad platforms. Google and Meta keep adding automatic features. Your job moves to the inputs: tracking, offers, creative and clear goals.
- Customers meet AI first. WhatsApp business assistants can answer a customer before a person does. So your product details, prices and FAQs must be clear and current.
- Search answers come from AI. People get summaries in search. Read how to appear in Google AI Overviews.
- Rules get firmer. ASCI's labelling rules start around the end of 2026, and India's data protection duties grow in 2027.
The longer view is in our guide on how AI will affect digital marketing.
Be confident, not afraid. Tools change every month. What lasts is knowing your customer, making a clear offer and checking your numbers. People who learn the tools do more with the same team.
The people and bodies behind AI in Indian marketing
These are public examples of who shaped AI use in India. Roles are as reported on 10 October 2026. Roles change, so check before you quote.
- Indian-language AI. Bhashini is the government's language platform under MeitY. Amitabh Nag is its Chief Executive. Profiles say he has held the role since March 2023. The IndiaAI Mission is the wider plan. The Union Cabinet approved it in March 2024 with about Rs 10,372 crore.
- Sarvam AI. Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar founded this Bengaluru firm in 2023. It builds AI for Indian languages. Business Today says Kumar is its Chief Executive. He also helped start AI4Bharat, an open-source group for Indian-language AI.
- AI in a big Indian ad. In 2021, Cadbury Celebrations let small shop owners make ads starring Shah Rukh Khan. Mondelez India was the brand. Ogilvy India and Wavemaker built the idea. Rephrase.ai supplied the technology. Its co-founders are Ashray Malhotra, Nisheeth Lahoti and Shivam Mangla. Ogilvy India's creative chiefs are Kainaz Karmakar, Harshad Rajadhyaksha and Sukesh Nayak. The work won a Titanium Lion at Cannes in 2022.
- Rule makers and industry bodies. The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) wrote the AI labelling rules of 29 September 2026. NASSCOM, founded in 1988, is the trade body for India's tech firms. IAMAI, set up in 2004, speaks for digital firms, including digital advertising.
Our reading: the Cadbury case shows AI at its best. It helped small local sellers, and a clear idea sat behind it. Brands and people are named only as public examples. They are not PromotEdge clients or endorsers unless stated.
A lesson from the books
Clayton Christensen and his co-authors, in Competing Against Luck (2016), say people hire a product to do a job. Hire an AI tool the same way. Name the job first, then see which tool does it, and fire the tools that do not.
