Good design in Chennai begins with the Tamil line, not the English one. Tamil set as carefully as English, on paper and on screen.

Most Chennai readers meet you in Tamil.Your artwork should start there.

A design that puts the reader's own script second loses them at the first glance. PromotEdge designs press ads, brochures, festive posts and shop artwork in Tamil and English for retailers, exporters and service firms.

The aim: each reader gets your offer in the script they read first.

A graphic design company turns a message into something people can see and use: a half-page ad, a price list, a standee, a post. A Tamil line often runs wider than its English partner, so we plan the grid for both scripts from the first sketch. Our language partners write Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English copy. We think creative and act on numbers.

Our servicing team is based in cities across India. See the Chennai overview and our graphic design page for the method. Compare with Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Delhi NCR.

/ 03 Why Chennai design is different

Two scripts, timed screens and a busy calendar.

Four facts change how a Chennai design brief is written.

Letter sizes are set by rule. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the city's civic body, asked every shop in May 2025 to show its name in Tamil. The ratio is 5:3:2: Tamil largest, then English, then any third language. In September 2026 the Madras High Court gave retailers a final date: 1 November 2026. Glow signs and standees repeat the name too.

One city, five big languages. About 78% named Tamil as their mother tongue, with Telugu, Urdu, Hindi and Malayalam next (Census 2011, as reported). An ad that runs in three languages needs three layouts, not one layout with three pastes.

Screens give you ten seconds. Under the 2023 Tamil Nadu rules, as reported, a scrolling display must hold each ad for 10 seconds. A roadside screen needs a still that reads in one look; motion suits malls and parking lots.

The design calendar is crowded. Ayudha Pooja is on 19 October and Vijayadasami on 20 October 2026, with Deepavali on 8 November. The Chennai Marathon (3 January 2027) and the 50th Book Fair (7 to 19 January 2027) follow. Each needs its own artwork.

/ 04 Chennai on the record

What the rules and the calendarmean for your files.

Chennai factWhat the source saysWhat it means for design
Tamil on shop namesGCC, May 2025: Tamil, English and a third language at 5:3:2. The High Court's final date for retailers is 1 November 2026. The GCC's penalty is Rs 2,000.Start the layout from the Tamil name. English is sized from it.
Scrolling screens2023 rules, as reported: 10-second dwell, one-second transition. Two files per screen job: a still for roads, a moving cut for indoor sites.
Papers by languageOn the ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) list, Eenadu and Sakshi (Telugu), Malayala Manorama and Rajasthan Patrika (Hindi) print here.Column sizes differ by paper, so each insertion gets its own file.
Festive dates aheadAyudha Pooja 19 October, Vijayadasami 20 October, Deepavali 8 November 2026.Brief festive work about four weeks before the date.

Sources as cited, checked 4 October 2026. Penalties are the government's figures, not ours. Papers are named as part of the city, not as clients. General guidance, not legal advice.

/ 05 How a Chennai design job runs

Brief to print file, with a Tamil check built in.

  1. 01

Brief on a call (day 1)

Who reads this, in which language, and what should they do next? Send photos of your current ads and boards.

  2. 02

Words in both languages (days 2-5)

The Tamil copy is written, not machine-translated, and you approve both before design starts.

  3. 03

    First layouts (week 2)

Two directions on your real sizes. We tell you which one we would pick, even when it is not the one you like.

  4. 04

Proof and native read (week 3)

A native reader checks spelling, line breaks and meaning in each script.

  5. 05

Files for every use (weeks 3-4)

Press-ready files per paper and site, screen files, and light WhatsApp versions.

Tell us what’s not working. We’ll send you an honest one-page growth plan, free.

How we deliver it, and why

How your business model changes the plan

A retailer needs boards and festive sets. An exporter needs clean English catalogues. A packaged-goods firm needs labels in two scripts.

  1. Write the Tamil, then design. A pasted-in line breaks the layout. Both scripts approved first.
  2. Draw each paper's column separately. A squeezed layout loses readers. One file per insertion.
  3. Check on a phone. Many readers see the work there first. A phone proof.

Go deeper: Chennai's exporters and readers

Exporters and phone readers

Kancheepuram district, which takes in Sriperumbudur, was India's second-largest goods-exporting district in FY26, at $26.4 billion. TRAI counted 67.73 million internet subscribers in Tamil Nadu in March 2026, so every file is checked on a phone first.

Season events

The Music Academy held its 99th concerts from 15 December 2025 to 1 January 2026. The state tourism site calls Margazhi a month-long festival of music and dance. December and January bring stall graphics, programme ads and sponsor creatives.

AI in graphic design: today and next

Today: Adobe Firefly

Adobe says Firefly makes images from text prompts and edits with tools such as Generative Fill, and that its models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content. Our view: good for mood boards and rough ideas. Tamil type, spelling and 5:3:2 layouts are still checked by people.

Next

Our view: first drafts will come faster, so a clear brief and a native Tamil read matter more. Want us to test yours? Ask us.

/ 06 Cost

What affects the cost of graphic design in Chennai.

No price list. These things move the number.

We don't put a price list online. After a first call we write the scope and send the quote within 2 working days. Printing and media are billed at actual cost, shown before you approve.

What affects the cost

  • Scripts. English only, Tamil and English, or a third script.
  • Sizes. How many papers, board formats and screens each design must fit.
  • Shop count. One front, or many branches, each measured for 5:3:2.

How we quote

  1. A call about what you need designed, in which languages and by when
  2. A written scope with each design, size and language on its own line

What you get in the quote

  • The list of designs and each size they need
  • What you keep: open files, fonts list and templates

Comparing quotes? Check whether the Tamil is designed by someone who reads it, and whether all your sizes are counted.

Design work for Chennai?

Send us one ad or one shop board. We'll show it in Tamil and English.

Or leave your number. A strategist calls you in one working day.

We use these details only to call you back. Privacy notice.

Straight answers.

  • Chennai is served by a servicing team based in cities across India. Design runs well on video calls and shared files, so we work hybrid and remote. We come to Chennai regularly, and can work at your shop or office when a job needs it.

  • Yes. The Tamil copy is written for the reader, and the layout is planned for Tamil type from the start. A native reader checks every file. Our language partners write the Tamil, and our team briefs and checks it. We show you both versions before design starts.

  • Under the GCC's rule, Tamil goes first and largest, then English, then any other language. The Madras High Court has set 1 November 2026 as the final date for retailers. Send us photos and sizes; we redraw the artwork. General guidance, not legal advice.

  • About four weeks before the date. Ayudha Pooja is on 19 October and Deepavali on 8 November 2026, so Deepavali work should be briefed now. For January 2027, brief in November. Printing and fitting need extra time, so the earlier the better.

  • We prepare press-ready files for every paper and board. You can take them to a printer you choose, or we can suggest one and manage the job. Printing is billed at actual cost, shown first. Ask us to quote the design and printing together.

  • Don't pick on looks alone. Ask to see a Tamil layout the company designed, not one typed in later. Ask how many sizes the fee covers, and who checks the Tamil. Judge us on those answers too. That tells you more than a portfolio.

  • Files for one job take two to four weeks. The effect shows once the work is out: more calls from an ad, fewer questions at the counter. Track it for one season. Tell us the date you need, and we plan backwards. We confirm the timeline in the quote.
