What is integrated marketing communication (IMC)?
One idea, one plan and one set of numbers, across every channel you use. Who this is for: Owners whose ads, website or sales messages do not feel like one brand.
What is integrated marketing communication (IMC)?
Integrated marketing communication (IMC) means planning everything a brand says in the market around one positioning and one idea. This covers advertising, PR, digital, sales material, packaging and on-ground activity.
Each channel gets a defined job. Buyers hear the same message wherever they meet the brand.
PromotEdge plans every channel as one system. Your message stays the same wherever a buyer meets you. We judge the work on enquiries and sales.
The idea is older than most people think. In 1989, the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A's) described it as planning that weighs the strategic role of each communication discipline. It then combines them so the message is clear and consistent and has more impact. Don Schultz and colleagues at Northwestern University developed it further in their 1993 book, Integrated Marketing Communications.
What has changed since is the number of places a brand appears. An Indian buyer might see a regional TV film and hear a radio spot. A dealer may recommend the brand. Then the buyer searches on Google, watches a YouTube review and finishes the conversation on WhatsApp. IMC makes those touchpoints add up instead of competing.
IMC is a planning discipline, not a channel or a department. A company with three agencies can be integrated; a company with one agency can still be fragmented.
Northwestern University's Medill school says IMC is a framework that carefully links all forms of communication and messages. It calls Don Schultz the father of IMC.
A public example from India is Cadbury Dairy Milk Milkinis, launched in September 2025. Mondelez India said it would back the launch on television and digital media. It also named influencer partners and social stories. Cadbury is named here only as an example.
What IMC is, and what it is not
| IMC is | IMC is not |
|---|---|
| One positioning and one campaign idea, adapted for each channel | The same ad resized for every format |
| A defined job for each channel, with its own measure of success | Being on every channel because competitors are |
| One brief, one calendar and one owner for the whole plan | Separate briefs to separate agencies at different times |
| Measured on shared business numbers: enquiries, cost per lead, sales | Each channel reporting its own success in its own terms |
| Consistent with what sales teams, dealers and customer service say | Limited to advertising and social media |
| Reviewed and rebalanced as results come in | A plan written once a year and left alone |
The components of IMC
IMC covers every way a brand communicates, paid or not. These are the usual building blocks.
Advertising
TV, print, radio, outdoor and cinema: the mass-media layer that builds reach and trust.
Public relations
Media relations, announcements, thought leadership and reputation management: credibility paid media cannot buy.
Digital marketing
Search, social, content, online video, websites and marketplaces, where buyers check, compare and enquire.
Sales promotion
Offers, schemes, contests, exchange programmes and festive deals that give people a reason to buy today.
Direct and CRM marketing
Email, WhatsApp, SMS and calls to people who have opted in, from first enquiry to repeat purchase.
BTL and events
Activations, sampling, exhibitions, dealer meets and rural campaigns, in the places decisions are made.
Sales and channel enablement
Brochures, presentations, dealer kits and training, so sales teams and partners tell the same story.
Packaging and point of sale
Often the last message a buyer sees before choosing is on the pack, on the shelf or at the counter.
The classic tools of promotion are advertising and personal selling. They also include sales promotion and publicity. The NCERT Business Studies textbook lists these four. The blocks below add more, because Indian buyers meet brands in many places.
Our beliefWe believe in process. Good results should repeat, not happen by luck.
What holds an IMC plan together
Channels are the visible part. These four pieces of planning are what make them integrated.
Positioning
Who the brand is for, why they should choose it and the proof. Written down and agreed by leadership.
Message architecture
The core message, and what changes for each audience: buyer, influencer, dealer, employee.
Channel roles and calendar
Decide which channel does which job. Also decide when, and in what order, on one shared calendar.
Shared measurement
One set of business numbers, tracked by source into one CRM or lead sheet and reported monthly.
Most IMC problems come from skipping one of these four pieces. The usual challenges are no agreed positioning and no single owner. Agencies work from separate briefs. Leads are not tracked to a source. Budgets stay fixed for the whole year. Fix the planning first. The channels then follow.
Why IMC matters for Indian mid-size companies
Large brands can absorb some waste. Growing companies usually cannot.
Budgets cannot carry waste
When one wrong channel bet is a large share of the year's spend, every channel has to pull in the same direction.
Media is fragmented
Media comes in many languages, regional channels and editions, plus digital platforms. Without one plan, the brand sounds different in every state.
Buyers check across channels
People who see an ad search for the brand. They read reviews and ask on WhatsApp. Gaps between channels lose them.
Dealers and influencers carry the message
Dealers, masons, chemists and channel partners repeat what they are told. If nobody briefs them, they tell their own story.
Several vendors, no owner
A creative agency, a media buyer, a digital agency and an events vendor can each succeed on paper while sales stay flat.
Leadership wants numbers
Promoters and boards ask what marketing returned. Shared measurement is the only honest way to answer.
The main benefits of IMC are simple. Buyers hear one clear message. Less money goes on channels that pull against each other. The brand is easier to remember and trust. Each lead is tracked to its source. Leaders can see what marketing returned.
Is your marketing integrated? A checklist
| Check | Integrated looks like | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Anyone in marketing or sales can state it in one sentence | Each agency describes the brand differently |
| Campaign idea | The film, the hoarding, the reel and the dealer board are clearly one campaign | They look like four different brands |
| Briefing | One brief, shared with every agency and team at the same time | Separate briefs, written at different times |
| Channel roles | Each channel has a job and a measure, agreed before launch | Every channel is judged on reach, or on nothing |
| Calendar | Activations, digital and mainline are sequenced on one calendar | The activation runs weeks after the TV flight ends |
| Digital readiness | Brand search campaigns and landing pages go live with mainline | Competitors appear when people search your name |
| Sales and dealers | Briefed before launch, with material that matches the campaign | Dealers hear about the campaign from customers |
| Languages | Regional versions adapted by people who speak the language | Literal translations, done at the last minute |
| Lead tracking | Every enquiry carries its source into one CRM or lead sheet | Each agency reports its own numbers in its own format |
| Ownership | One named person owns the plan and the result | Nobody can say who is accountable for the whole |
| Budget review | Money moves between channels each quarter, based on results | Each channel's budget is fixed for the year |
Most warning signs are planning problems, not agency problems. They can usually be fixed without changing who does the work.
How to build an IMC plan, step by step
- 01
Audit what you have
List every channel, agency, spend line, message and result from the last year. Note where messages conflict and where leads go untracked.
- 02
Set the business objective
Pick one or two numbers the plan must move. Examples are qualified enquiries, new dealers or sales in a region. Note today's figure as the baseline.
- 03
Define audiences and the journey
Who buys, who influences and who approves, and the touchpoints each one meets before a decision.
- 04
Settle positioning and messages
The core proposition and its proof, then what each audience needs to hear. Get leadership and sales to agree it in writing.
- 05
Choose the campaign idea
One idea that can live in a film, a press ad, a search ad, a dealer kit and a WhatsApp message.
- 06
Assign channel roles and budget
Give each channel a job and a measure, and fund the main job properly first. Our guide to splitting a marketing budget explains how.
- 07
Build one calendar
Sequence launches, media flights, activations, PR moments and festive offers so they reinforce each other.
- 08
Set up shared measurement
Campaign codes, tagged links, dedicated numbers and a CRM that records the source of every lead.
- 09
Brief everyone together
One kick-off with every agency, the sales head and key dealers, working from one brief.
- 10
Review monthly, rebalance quarterly
Report on the shared numbers each month and move budget between channels each quarter.
Cadbury Dairy Milk's The Khaas Seat, from March 2026, is another public example. One idea showed up in many places. A QR code on the pack let fans try to win a seat at a Mumbai Indians home match. Two films told the story. A limited-edition pack was sold only on quick commerce apps.
One integrated agency or separate specialists?
| Factor | One integrated agency | Separate specialists |
|---|---|---|
| Consistency of message | Easier: one team writes the idea and adapts it | Harder: needs a strong brief and an owner on your side |
| Accountability | One party answers for the overall result | Each answers for its own channel; you join the dots |
| Depth in each channel | Varies; check the specialists behind each service you will use | Often deeper in the one discipline they focus on |
| Coordination effort | Lower for your team, with one point of contact | Higher; needs joint meetings and shared reporting |
| Cost | One fee structure and less duplicated planning | Several fees and some duplication, but you buy only what you need |
| Flexibility | Changing agency means changing several services at once | Easy to replace one specialist without disturbing the rest |
| Dependence | More reliance on one supplier | Risk spread across several suppliers |
| Best fit | Companies without a large in-house marketing team, or with fragmented results | Companies with a strong in-house marketing head who can own integration |
A hybrid is common. One lead agency or strategy partner owns the plan and the numbers. Specialists run particular channels to the same brief. Whichever model you choose, someone on your side must own the result.
IMC with PromotEdge
PromotEdge is an integrated marketing agency, organised in four pillars: strategy, mainline advertising, digital and BTL. We believe in process.
Clients use one pillar or all four under one plan. Integration starts in strategy. It then carries through advertising, digital and BTL.
If you want the channel view first, read our guide to ATL, BTL and TTL marketing. If you are choosing an agency, our guide to choosing a marketing agency shows a fair way to compare.

Common questions.
-
The tools of IMC start with advertising and personal selling. They also include sales promotion and publicity, the four promotion tools in the NCERT Business Studies textbook. IMC adds digital marketing, direct marketing, PR, BTL events and packaging. They are integrated when they share one positioning and one set of numbers.
-
They overlap. TTL (through-the-line) describes a campaign that mixes mass media with on-ground and digital channels. IMC is broader and covers all of a brand's communication over time, beyond a single campaign. That includes PR, sales material, packaging and customer communication.
-
IMC has no official list of four pillars, so guides differ. This guide uses four planning pieces. They are positioning, message architecture, channel roles with one calendar, and shared measurement. Without all four, the channels run apart and the message changes from place to place.
-
Yes. IMC is a way of planning, not a budget level. A company using only digital and a few dealer programmes can be fully integrated. So can one that adds some regional print. The channels must share one idea and one calendar. They must report one set of numbers.
-
The challenges of IMC are mostly about planning. There is often no agreed positioning and no single owner. Agencies work from separate briefs. Leads are not tracked to a source. Budgets stay fixed for the year. The fix starts with one brief and one owner, whether one agency or several do the work.
-
Agree a few business numbers for the whole plan. Examples are qualified enquiries, cost per lead, sales by region and branded search. Track every lead's source into one CRM. Then judge each channel on the job it was given, not on the same metric.
-
A building-materials brand entering a new state might run regional TV and print for trust. It could brief dealers and hold mason meets before launch. The same message goes on dealer boards and in WhatsApp follow-ups. Search ads capture interest, and every enquiry is tracked to a dealer.
